The Wallpaper Trend Bringing Warmth to San Diego Homes

Neutral interiors have evolved. Today's most welcoming spaces are not built from a single shade of beige or white; they are carefully layered with tone, texture, and natural materials. One of the most versatile ways to create that depth is through textured grasscloth and softly patterned neutral wallcoverings.

For San Diego homeowners, this approach is especially appealing. Our natural light, relaxed architecture, and connection to the coast create the perfect setting for wallcoverings that feel warm, organic, and refined. At Gael's Wallcoverings, we have helped local families use texture and pattern to make their rooms feel more personal for over 20 years.

Why Layered Neutrals Feel More Interesting

A room decorated in one flat neutral can sometimes feel unfinished. Layered neutrals solve that problem by introducing subtle variation. Warm ivory, sand, mushroom, taupe, and soft gray can work together while maintaining a quiet, cohesive palette.

The key is contrast through texture rather than dramatic color. A smooth painted ceiling, a woven wallcovering, a linen sofa, and natural wood furniture each reflect light differently. Those small differences make the room feel dimensional throughout the day.

What Makes Grasscloth Wallcovering Special?

Grasscloth is one of the most requested wallcoverings in San Diego homes, and for good reason. It is made from natural plant fibers — seagrass, jute, sisal, or bamboo — woven together and backed with paper. The result is a wallcovering with genuine organic texture that no printed pattern can replicate.

Each roll of grasscloth is slightly different. The fibers vary in tone and weave, which means your walls will have a natural, handcrafted quality. This is not a flaw — it is the point. Grasscloth brings the kind of warmth and character that makes a room feel lived-in and loved.

How to Layer Neutrals Successfully

Start with your largest surface — the walls — and choose a wallcovering with subtle texture. A warm linen weave or a soft grasscloth in a sand or warm white tone gives you a foundation that works with almost anything.

From there, layer in furniture and textiles that introduce slightly different tones and textures. A cream sofa, a natural wood coffee table, a jute rug, and linen curtains all work together because they share the same warm undertone while offering visual variety.

There is a moment in every wallcovering project when the last panel goes up and the room suddenly becomes something entirely different. It is one of our favorite things to witness. A space that felt flat, cold, or unfinished is transformed — not by new furniture or a renovation, but by the walls themselves.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we have been creating these transformations in San Diego homes for over 20 years. Here are a few of the stories we love to tell.

The Dining Room That Found Its Character

A family in Mission Hills came to us with a dining room that felt disconnected from the rest of their home. The walls were painted a safe, neutral gray — inoffensive but uninspiring. After exploring our grasscloth collection, they chose a warm, hand-woven seagrass in a deep honey tone. The result was immediate and dramatic. The room went from feeling like a placeholder to feeling like the heart of the home.

The Bedroom That Became a Retreat

A couple in La Jolla wanted their master bedroom to feel more like a boutique hotel and less like a builder-grade space. We installed a soft, silk-inspired wallcovering in a warm champagne tone on the wall behind the bed. Combined with new bedding and lighting, the room was unrecognizable — in the best possible way.

The Entryway That Made a First Impression

First impressions matter. A homeowner in Del Mar asked us to help their entryway feel more welcoming and memorable. We installed a bold botanical mural on the main wall — a lush, hand-painted design with deep greens and warm golds. Guests now stop and comment on it every single time.

What These Transformations Have in Common

In every case, the change was not just visual — it was emotional. The right wallcovering changes how a room feels to be in. It adds warmth, personality, and intention. It makes a house feel like a home.

One accent wall might be the simplest design decision you make. But the transformation? That's anything but simple. Visit our San Diego showroom to browse our collection of wallpapers, fabric wallcoverings, and custom murals. Our team is here to help you find the perfect accent wall for your space.

San Diego has a design language all its own. It is shaped by the light, the landscape, and the easy relationship between indoors and outdoors that defines life here. The most successful San Diego interiors do not fight that language — they speak it fluently.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we have spent over 20 years helping local homeowners find wallcoverings that feel right for this place. Here is what we have learned about bringing coastal calm indoors.

The Colors of the San Diego Coast

The San Diego palette is not the bright, saturated blue-and-white of a New England beach house. It is softer and warmer — the color of bleached driftwood, sea glass, warm sand, and the hazy horizon on a June morning. Wallcoverings in warm whites, soft greiges, pale sage, and dusty blue work beautifully in San Diego homes because they echo what is already outside the window.

Natural Textures That Feel at Home Here

Texture is as important as color in a coastal interior. Grasscloth, seagrass, linen weaves, and natural fiber wallcoverings all have an organic quality that connects a room to the natural world. They are also practical — natural fiber wallcoverings are durable, timeless, and age beautifully in the San Diego climate.

Bringing the Outside In

The best San Diego interiors blur the line between inside and outside. Wallcoverings with botanical motifs — soft leaf patterns, organic shapes, nature-inspired textures — help create that connection even in rooms without a view. A bedroom wrapped in a soft botanical linen feels like a garden retreat. A dining room with a grasscloth accent wall feels grounded and natural.

Our Recommendations for San Diego Homes

For living rooms and bedrooms, we love warm linen weaves and natural grasscloth in sand, honey, and warm white tones. For dining rooms and entryways, a botanical mural or a textured accent wall in sage or dusty blue makes a beautiful statement. For bathrooms and kitchens, we recommend moisture-resistant options that still feel organic and warm.

Come visit our showroom in Mission Valley to explore our coastal collection. Our team knows San Diego design, and we would love to help you find the perfect wallcovering for your home.

Not every design transformation requires a full wallcovering project. Sometimes the most powerful changes come from the smallest details — a single decal placed with intention, a custom art piece that anchors a room, a personalized element that makes a space feel unmistakably yours.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we offer a curated collection of custom wall art, decals, and personalized pieces that complement our wallcovering work. Here is how to use them well.

What Makes a Decal Work

A well-chosen decal does three things: it adds visual interest, it reinforces the room's design story, and it feels intentional rather than decorative for its own sake. The best decals are not afterthoughts — they are design decisions.

Scale matters enormously. A small decal on a large wall disappears. An oversized decal in a tight space overwhelms. The right size creates balance — it fills the space without dominating it.

Pairing Decals with Wallcoverings

One of our favorite techniques is layering a custom decal over a textured wallcovering. A botanical decal over a linen weave, for example, creates a sophisticated, curated look that feels like it belongs in a design magazine. The texture of the wallcovering adds depth to the decal, and the decal adds personality to the wallcovering.

Custom Pieces for Every Space

We work with artists and designers to create custom decals and art pieces tailored to your vision. Whether you want a quote in a specific typeface, a botanical illustration in your exact color palette, or a geometric pattern that complements your wallcovering, we can make it happen.

Visit our showroom to explore our decal and custom art collection. Our design team is here to help you find the perfect finishing touch for your space.

You can browse thousands of wallcovering options online. You can zoom in on patterns, read reviews, and order samples to your door. And yet, every week, customers come into our showroom and tell us the same thing: they had no idea how different it would look and feel in person.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we built our Mission Valley showroom specifically because we believe that seeing and touching wallcoverings in person is irreplaceable. Here is why.

Texture Cannot Be Photographed

A photograph of grasscloth can show you the color and the general pattern of the weave. It cannot show you how the fibers catch the light, how the surface feels under your hand, or how the texture changes as you move around the room. These are the qualities that make grasscloth so special — and they are invisible on a screen.

Color Looks Different in Every Light

Screen calibration, photography lighting, and monitor settings all affect how a color appears online. A wallcovering that looks warm and golden on your laptop might read as cool and gray in your actual room. The only way to know how a color will look in your space is to see it in your space — or at least in a showroom with similar lighting conditions.

Scale Is Impossible to Judge from a Small Sample

A pattern that looks bold and dramatic in a small online swatch might feel subtle and refined when installed across a full wall. The reverse is also true — a pattern that seems delicate online can feel overwhelming at scale. Seeing full-size samples and installed examples in our showroom gives you a much more accurate sense of how a pattern will live in your room.

Our Team Makes the Difference

Beyond the samples themselves, our showroom gives you access to our team — designers and wallcovering specialists with over 20 years of experience. We can answer questions, offer honest opinions, and help you navigate the hundreds of options available to find the ones that are right for your specific space.

We invite you to come in and explore. No appointment necessary, though we are always happy to schedule a dedicated consultation. Our showroom is located at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108.

The accent wall is one of the most powerful and accessible tools in interior design. It requires commitment to just one wall — not four — and yet the impact on the entire room is immediate and dramatic.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we install accent walls every week. Here is what we have learned about making them work.

Choosing the Right Wall

The best accent wall is usually the one your eye naturally goes to when you enter the room — the wall behind the bed in a bedroom, the wall behind the sofa in a living room, or the wall at the end of a hallway. It is the wall that anchors the space.

Choosing the Right Wallcovering

An accent wall is an opportunity to be bolder than you might be with a full-room treatment. A pattern that would feel overwhelming on four walls can be stunning on one. A texture that would be too much everywhere can be exactly right as a focal point.

Some of our most popular accent wall choices: bold botanical murals, rich grasscloth in deep tones, geometric patterns with strong contrast, and silk-inspired wallcoverings in jewel tones.

The Transformation in Practice

A bedroom in Coronado: plain white walls, nice furniture, but no personality. We installed a deep teal grasscloth on the wall behind the bed. The room went from pleasant to extraordinary. The furniture looked more intentional, the bedding looked more luxurious, and the whole space felt designed.

A living room in North Park: a beautiful sofa and rug, but the walls felt disconnected. We installed a large-scale botanical mural on the main wall. The room immediately had a focal point, a story, and a sense of place.

One accent wall might be the simplest design decision you make. But the transformation? That's anything but simple. Visit our San Diego showroom to browse our collection of wallpapers, fabric wallcoverings, and custom murals.

What's In Right Now: 2026 Wallpaper Trends

Every year, we see design trends evolve. Some are fleeting moments that fade by summer. Others define a decade. 2026 is shaping up to be the year that homeowners finally reject the beige box — and we're here for it.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we've installed thousands of walls across San Diego over the past two decades. We've watched minimalism reach its peak, and now we're seeing a beautiful swing back to intentional, expressive walls. Here's what's trending, and why it matters for your home.

1. Earthy Tone Dominance

Forget soft grays and blush tones. The colors leading 2026 are grounded and warm: terracotta, sage green, warm ochre, deep charcoal, and rich chocolate browns. These aren't the muted pastels of years past — they're confident, saturated colors that say this room was designed with intention.

2. Geometric and Large-Scale Patterns Are Back

Minimalism taught us less is more. 2026 is proving more can be beautiful again. We're seeing a major return of bold geometric patterns — hexagons, large-scale geometric shapes, modern abstract designs — but executed with restraint. Usually on a single accent wall, paired with solid or textured finishes elsewhere.

3. Texture Is Non-Negotiable

Flat paint is officially out for discerning homeowners. 2026 is the year of tactile, textured surfaces — and this is where fabric and natural fiber wallcoverings absolutely shine. Grasscloth, linen weaves, boucle textures, and hand-woven finishes are trending hard. They catch light differently throughout the day, add depth to rooms, and make a space feel curated and intentional.

4. San Diego-Specific Trend: Coastal Bohemian

San Diego homeowners are blending coastal influences with bohemian warmth. Natural fibers, warm earth tones, organic textures, paired with light, airy furniture and vintage-inspired decor. A living room wrapped in warm cream linen, accented with a sage green accent wall, paired with locally-sourced wood and plants. It's sophisticated, it's San Diego, and it's timeless.

Ready to jump on these trends? Visit our San Diego showroom to see trending colors, patterns, and textures in person. Our team has two decades of experience helping homeowners translate trends into timeless, personal spaces.

In the world of interior design, few elements have the transformative power of a statement mural. Whether it's a bold botanical design, an abstract watercolor-inspired creation, or a custom piece that reflects your personal vision, a mural can completely reimagine a space — turning a plain wall into a stunning focal point that tells your story.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we've spent over 20 years creating these magical transformations throughout San Diego. Here's why custom murals are the secret weapon in any designer's toolkit.

Why Choose a Custom Mural?

A custom mural is more than decoration. It's an investment in your space. Unlike standard wallpaper, a mural can add depth and dimension to any room, create a focal point that anchors your design, express your personality and style, and transform a dated or plain space into something extraordinary.

The Art of Choosing the Right Mural Design

Selecting the perfect mural is a collaborative process. We work with you to understand your design aesthetic, the mood you want to create, your color palette and how it complements existing decor, and the architectural features of the room. Our design experts can help you navigate trends while ensuring your choice remains timeless.

Professional Installation Makes All the Difference

A beautiful mural is only as good as its installation. Our team brings 20+ years of precision work to every project. We handle surface preparation and priming, precise pattern alignment, professional hanging techniques, and lasting durability. A properly installed mural can last decades, providing endless enjoyment and admiration from guests and family alike.

At Gael's Wallcoverings, we believe every wall deserves to tell a story. Ready to explore custom mural options? Our showroom features samples and inspiration, and our design consultants are ready to discuss your vision. Walk into any beautifully designed space in San Diego, and there's something you'll notice almost immediately — it's not the furniture. It's not the lighting. It's the walls. At Gael's Wallcoverings, we've spent over 20 years helping homeowners and designers discover what paint simply cannot deliver: the depth, warmth, and soul that only texture can bring to a room.

What Makes Fabric Wallcoverings Different

Flat paint reflects light in a single, predictable way. Fabric wallcoverings — whether woven linen, silk-inspired finishes, or richly textured grasscloth — interact with light throughout the day. Morning sun washes across the fibers differently than afternoon glow, and artificial light at night casts soft shadows that paint can never replicate. The result is a living, breathing wall that changes with your day.

The Most Popular Textures in San Diego Homes Right Now

Linen and natural weaves are soft, organic, and endlessly versatile. Perfect for bedrooms, home offices, and coastal retreats, linen wallcoverings bring a quiet elegance that pairs beautifully with San Diego's natural light. Grasscloth is rich, warm, and full of character — hand-woven grasscloth makes a statement in dining rooms, entryways, and accent walls, and every panel is unique.

Silk-inspired finishes add a touch of drama. They shimmer subtly, adding depth to powder rooms, formal living spaces, and boutique-inspired bedrooms. Boucle and woven textures are cozy, tactile, and incredibly inviting — trending in San Diego's luxury residential projects, adding warmth without weight.

Why Texture Matters More Than Color

While color trends come and go, texture is timeless. A well-chosen textured wallcovering will outlast any paint trend. It adds architectural interest to new construction and brings character to older homes. Fabric wallcoverings also naturally hide minor wall imperfections and absorb sound, making rooms feel quieter and more intimate.

Come visit us at our San Diego showroom to touch the textures yourself. There's no substitute for feeling the fabric in person. Call us at (619) 838-0385.

There's something deeply satisfying about transforming a room with wallpaper. Whether it's a bedroom accent wall, a powder room feature, or a full home makeover, the right wallpaper brings personality, warmth, and sophistication to any space. But here's the secret: the most beautiful wallpaper in the world only shines when it's installed perfectly.

At Gael's Wallcoverings in San Diego, we've spent over 20 years helping homeowners and designers bring their vision to life. And we've learned that installation matters just as much as pattern selection.

Why Professional Installation Matters

DIY wallpaper projects are charming in theory, but professional installation makes an enormous difference. Expert installers understand wall preparation, moisture control, pattern matching, and seam placement in ways that ensure your wallpaper not only looks stunning on day one but stays beautiful for years to come.

The Installation Process: What to Expect

Wall preparation is the foundation of everything. Walls must be clean, smooth, and properly primed. Our team assesses moisture levels, fills gaps, and applies primer to ensure the adhesive bonds perfectly and the wallpaper adheres evenly.

Measuring and cutting: every room is slightly different. We measure precisely, accounting for pattern repeats, and cut each piece to fit your unique space. This is where attention to detail prevents visible seams and pattern misalignment.

Different wallpapers require different adhesives. Vinyl, fabric, grasscloth, and custom murals all have specific requirements. Using the right adhesive ensures durability and prevents peeling. Careful placement and smoothing eliminates bubbles, wrinkles, and misalignment.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping wall prep: primer and proper cleaning are non-negotiable. Wrong adhesive: using the wrong type can cause peeling within weeks. Ignoring pattern repeats: a misaligned pattern is immediately obvious. Over-wetting the paste: too much moisture causes stretching and shifting. Rushing the smoothing: take your time to eliminate every bubble and wrinkle.

Whether you're ready for professional installation or want to DIY, our showroom is here to help. Stop by our Mission Valley location at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108 to see samples, ask installation questions, or schedule a consultation.

Design trends move fast, but at Gael's Wallcoverings in San Diego, we've learned something important: the best design choices are never about the trend. They're about you. That said, 2026 is bringing some genuinely gorgeous wallpaper moments to the table. Here's what we're seeing walk through our Mission Valley showroom, and why it's resonating with our clients.

Bold Geometry Is Having Its Moment

Gone are the days of wallpaper that whispers. Contemporary geometric patterns — think clean lines, abstract compositions, and unexpected angles — are making powerful statements in living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices. The sweet spot? Warm color palettes: terracottas, golds, creams, and muted jewel tones that feel sophisticated without being cold.

Botanical & Nature-Inspired Designs Never Go Out of Style

While geometric takes center stage, the botanical trend is quietly strengthening. Clients are choosing wallpapers with lush, organic patterns — ferns, florals, leaves, botanicals — that bring the calm, grounding feeling of nature indoors. The difference from years past? Today's botanical designs are more sophisticated. Less literal, more artistic.

Texture Is the New Color

Here's a trend we're especially excited about: tactile, textured wallcoverings. Grasscloth, linen, embossed fabrics, and layered materials add depth and visual interest without relying on bold colors or patterns. These textured finishes feel luxurious and create a refined, upscale aesthetic. They're perfect for people who want sophisticated design without maximum visual noise.

Metallic Accents & Jewel Tones

Gold, copper, and soft metallic accents are weaving into wallpaper designs across all categories. Paired with deep jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, and plum, they create an elegant, almost luxurious feel that's perfect for accent walls or high-impact spaces. These designs work particularly well in dining rooms, home libraries, and entryways.

The best wallpaper trend is the one that makes your home feel more like you. Visit us at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108 or call (619) 838-0385.

A blank wall holds infinite possibility. At Gael's Wallcoverings in San Diego, we've spent over two decades helping homeowners and businesses discover the transformative power of custom murals and wall art. There's something truly magical about watching a single focal point change the entire feeling of a room.

Why Choose Custom Murals?

Unlike standard wallpaper, a custom mural is a one-of-a-kind statement piece that reflects your personality, style, and vision. Whether you're drawn to dreamy botanical landscapes, bold abstract designs, serene coastal scenes, or something entirely unique to you — a mural becomes the heart of your space.

Design Options: From Classic to Contemporary

We work with a stunning range of artistic styles and inspirations. Botanical murals bring nature indoors with elegance and warmth. Abstract designs make bold statements that spark conversation. Geometric patterns add modern sophistication. Custom photography or artwork becomes a permanent, museum-quality focal point.

Installation & Durability

Our team handles everything from concept to installation. We work with premium materials that are built to last, resist fading, and maintain their beauty for years. Whether you choose a hand-painted effect, a high-resolution print, or a seamless panel installation — your mural is created with expert craftsmanship.

Seeing is believing. Visit our Mission Valley showroom to explore our portfolio of custom murals, discuss your vision with our design experts, and discover how we can transform your walls into art. 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108 — (619) 838-0385.

Your office isn't just a workplace — it's a reflection of your business values and brand identity. The right wallcovering can transform how clients, employees, and visitors perceive your company from the moment they walk through the door. At Gael's Wallcoverings in San Diego, we've spent over two decades partnering with businesses to create commercial spaces that inspire confidence, professionalism, and creativity.

Why Commercial Wallcoverings Matter

Commercial spaces demand something different than residential interiors. They need durability, visual impact, and sophistication — all working together to create an environment that enhances your brand. A well-chosen wallcovering does this effortlessly, adding personality and polish without the high cost of a full renovation.

Specific Applications in Business Design

Corporate lobbies and entrance areas: your lobby is prime real estate for making an impression. A stunning accent wall with a premium texture or sophisticated pattern immediately signals that your company cares about quality. Conference rooms benefit from soft textured wallcoverings in professional colors that keep the focus on work while making the space feel polished.

Durability & Custom Solutions

Commercial wallcoverings are engineered to handle traffic, humidity, and regular cleaning better than residential options. Our materials are washable, fade-resistant, and built to look fresh for years. We also offer custom art and mural options — imagine your company logo integrated into a mural, or a custom photograph of your San Diego location featured as a focal point.

We work with office managers, facility directors, interior designers, and business owners throughout San Diego. Call us today to schedule a consultation. 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108 — (619) 838-0385.

When you're working with a smaller bedroom, powder room, or studio apartment, every design choice matters. The good news? Wallpaper is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal — and at Gael's Wallcoverings in San Diego, we've spent over 20 years helping homeowners transform compact spaces into rooms they absolutely love.

The Right Pattern Makes All the Difference

Light, airy patterns are your best friends in small spaces. Delicate florals, subtle geometrics, and soft botanical designs add visual interest without overwhelming the room. Large-scale patterns can also work beautifully — just use them strategically on a single accent wall and keep the rest of your space calm and neutral.

Color Psychology in Compact Rooms

Cool, neutral tones — soft grays, warm whites, pale blues — create an airy feel that makes spaces appear larger. Don't shy away from bold accent walls though. A rich jewel tone or dramatic pattern on a single wall creates depth and visual interest while keeping the overall space feeling open and light.

Pro Tip: Vertical Lines Draw the Eye Upward

Wallpaper with subtle vertical elements — thin stripes, vine patterns, or linear designs — naturally draws the eye upward, creating the illusion of higher ceilings. This is one of our favorite tricks for making rooms feel more spacious without a full renovation.

Visit our Mission Valley showroom at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108. Our design experts have worked with homeowners throughout San Diego to find wallcoverings that transform compact spaces into rooms that feel both larger and more beautiful.

Wallpaper has made a remarkable comeback in recent years, and 2026 is shaping up to be an incredible year for design innovation. At Gael's Wallcoverings, we have spent over two decades helping San Diego homeowners and businesses stay ahead of the curve with the latest wallpaper trends — and we are excited to share what is trending right now.

1. Nature-Inspired & Botanical Designs

One of the strongest trends we are seeing is a return to nature. Botanical prints, lush greenery, and organic textures are dominating both residential and commercial spaces. From delicate florals to bold jungle scenes, nature-inspired wallpaper creates a sense of calm and connection to the natural world.

2. Bold, Dramatic Patterns

Gone are the days of playing it safe. Homeowners are becoming bolder with their wall choices, embracing vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and eye-catching designs. Jewel tones paired with metallic accents, oversized florals, and modern geometric prints are creating stunning focal points in contemporary San Diego homes.

3. Textured & Dimensional Wallcoverings

Texture is having a major moment. Homeowners are moving beyond flat prints and discovering the beauty of textured wallpapers and panels that add depth and visual interest. Grasscloth, linen textures, embossed patterns, and 3D elements create a sophisticated, layered look.

4. Warm, Earthy Tones

As people seek comfort and warmth in their homes, earthy color palettes are becoming increasingly popular. Terracotta, warm ochre, soft sage, creamy beige, and chocolate brown are replacing cool grays in many San Diego homes. These warm, grounding colors create cozy, inviting spaces that feel both contemporary and timeless.

Visit our Mission Valley showroom and let our design-expert team help you choose wallpaper that not only reflects current trends but also feels authentically yours. 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108 — (619) 838-0385.

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt calm? Or energized? Or perhaps inspired? There's a reason for that feeling — and it has everything to do with color. At Gael's Wallcoverings, we have spent over 20 years helping San Diego homeowners and businesses understand that color is far more than just aesthetics. It is psychology. It is emotion. It is the invisible force that shapes how people experience a space.

The Science Behind Color Psychology

Color psychology is the study of how colors influence human behavior and emotion. Warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows are associated with energy, warmth, and stimulation. They increase heart rate and inspire conversation and creativity. These colors work beautifully in kitchens, dining rooms, and creative spaces.

Cool colors like blues, greens, and purples are calming and soothing. They lower heart rate and create feelings of peace and relaxation. These colors are ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, and home offices where you want to foster focus and tranquility. Neutral colors like grays, beiges, and whites provide balance and allow accent colors to shine.

Applying Color Psychology to Different Rooms

Master bedroom: choose soft, cool tones like pale blue, sage green, or lavender. These colors promote relaxation and better sleep. Home office: soft blues and greens enhance focus and productivity, while warm neutrals create an inviting atmosphere. Kitchen and dining room: warm colors stimulate appetite and conversation — soft warm whites, creams, and terracottas encourage gathering and enjoyment.

Living room: a deep jewel tone — emerald, sapphire, or rich burgundy — on one accent wall creates sophistication and drama while the other walls remain neutral. Commercial spaces: restaurants use warm, energetic colors to encourage lingering and spending. Boutique hotels use sophisticated jewel tones and rich neutrals to communicate luxury.

Color and Light in San Diego Homes

San Diego's abundant natural light is one of our greatest assets. Warm, golden sunlight transforms colors throughout the day. When choosing wallpaper or fabric colors, always view samples in natural light at different times of day. This is another reason we love having clients visit our Mission Valley showroom — you can see how colors look in various lighting conditions before making your final decision.

The team at Gael's Wallcoverings would love to help you explore color psychology in your own space. Come visit us and let's create something beautiful together. 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108 — (619) 838-0385.

Wallpaper is no longer just a backdrop — it's a bold design statement transforming living rooms and bedrooms into expressive, curated environments. As we step into 2026, homeowners and interior enthusiasts are leaning into wallcoverings that blend aesthetic richness with functional durability, especially in climate-specific spaces like those in San Diego where natural light and coastal air influence material choices.

Cozy Elegance: Living Room Wallpaper Trends for 2026

The top designs this year emphasize biophilic inspiration, incorporating organic patterns, earth-toned palettes, and tactile finishes that foster a calming, grounded ambiance. Popular elements include warm neutrals and nature-inspired hues — terracotta, sage green, and soft ochre are replacing cooler grays, adding depth without overwhelming space. Textured surfaces like grasscloth and embossed finishes provide visual interest and subtle dimension.

Large-scale botanical prints bring the outdoors in, enhancing airiness and connection to nature. Soft metallics — delicate gold or bronze inlays — add understated luxury, especially in transitional and modern farmhouse décors. When selecting wallpaper for high-traffic living areas, prioritize scrubbable, durable materials that maintain beauty over time.

Craft Serene Sanctuaries with Bedroom Wallpaper Trends

This year, calming hues like misty lavender, soft sage, and warm greige dominate bedroom walls, creating soothing backdrops that support mental well-being and deeper sleep. Paired with elegant matte finishes and nature-inspired textures, these wallcoverings enhance the room's sensory experience without overwhelming the space.

For those seeking personalization, accent walls with botanical murals or hand-drawn illustrations offer a unique storytelling element. Start with a sample to observe how natural light affects color tone throughout the day. Prioritize low-VOC materials for healthier indoor air quality. Balance pattern scale with room size — smaller bedrooms benefit from delicate motifs.

The Rise of Eco-Conscious Wallcoverings

Sustainability is no longer a niche trend — it's a design imperative. Homeowners and designers alike are prioritizing eco-friendly wallpaper options that combine aesthetics with responsibility. These sustainable wallcoverings are crafted from recycled materials, natural fibers, and low-VOC inks, offering a healthier alternative for homes while reducing ecological impact.

As we move into Spring and Summer 2026, interior design is shifting in a meaningful way. This season isn't about chasing trends — it's about creating spaces that feel layered, personal, and timeless. We're seeing a clear move away from cold minimalism and into warmth, texture, and individuality.

What's Trending for Spring/Summer 2026

Warm, nature-inspired color palettes: cool grays are taking a backseat. Instead, we're seeing soft creams and butter yellows, earthy ochres and terracottas, muted greens like sage and olive, sky blues and tranquil teals. These colors have personality but feel grounded, optimistic, and easy to live with.

Botanical and heritage patterns: florals are back — but not the small, predictable kind. 2026 is all about oversized botanicals, vintage-inspired florals, nature scenes and murals, birds, foliage, and organic motifs. This ties into a broader return to craftsmanship and heritage design.

Texture is everything: flat walls are being replaced by depth and tactile surfaces — grasscloths, linen textures, embossed or relief patterns, hand-painted or mural-style finishes. Designers are prioritizing materials that feel as good as they look.

How to Choose Wallcoverings That Won't Go Out of Style

Choose 'trend-adjacent,' not trend-driven: instead of going all-in on something bold and niche, pick a classic pattern in a trending color, or a trendy pattern in a muted, timeless palette. Invest in texture for longevity: if you're unsure about pattern, go with grasscloth, linen textures, or subtle tone-on-tone designs. These will never feel outdated and elevate any space instantly.

Avoid the biggest mistake — playing it too safe. Ironically, the most common regret is choosing something too plain. In 2026, character is what makes a space feel high-end. A well-chosen wallpaper adds depth, tells a story, and makes your space memorable.

Spring and Summer 2026 design is all about creating spaces that feel collected, warm, and personal — not cookie-cutter. Wallpaper is leading that movement. Visit our showroom at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108.

Rather often, we get projects that remind us exactly why we love what we do. Steve's story is one of those. Steve, a single father of two, wanted to add some character to his beautiful La Jolla home. The space was already tastefully designed, but the walls felt like they were missing something. He wasn't sure where to start or which walls should become accents, so he called us for an in-home consultation.

When we arrived, we were instantly impressed with the home's layout and décor. But for the first time, we were given something we rarely get — free rein to design the wallcovering concept for the entire household. We went room by room, hand-selecting wallpapers to bring each space to life.

Room by Room

His daughter's room: a sweet and simple design that leaves room for her drawings. His son's room: a bold and cool, yet timeless pattern to grow with him. The master bedroom: a dark, strong wallpaper paired with a coordinating design for his office. The entryway and living room: a seamless statement entry wall and living space with complementary textures.

The Result

Throughout the process, Steve stayed engaged — sending us before-and-after photos and updates as each room transformed. By the end, his once-neutral walls were filled with personality and style. Steve loved the results so much that he gave us a warm 5-star review. We're grateful for the trust he placed in us and thrilled to have played a part in making his home even more special.

At Gael's Wallpaper, we're proud to have San Diego's largest library of wallcovering sample books — from residential styles to high-performance commercial options. Whether you just need guidance on choosing your accent wall or want a full-home transformation like Steve's, we're here to make it happen. When it comes to interior design for commercial spaces, few elements are as impactful as a custom mural. Boardrooms and lobbies are the face of a business — they shape first impressions, inspire employees, and set the tone for brand identity. Whether you're designing for a corporate office, hotel, medical clinic, or coworking space, custom murals are a creative, memorable, and strategic way to stand out.

1. Showcase Your Brand Story

A mural isn't just art — it's storytelling on a large scale. Use imagery, typography, or abstract concepts to represent your company's mission, values, or history. A timeline of your company's milestones or visual interpretations of your brand's journey can turn a blank wall into a conversation starter.

2. Use Local Influence to Connect with Clients

Incorporate elements of your city's skyline, culture, or history to make your space feel rooted in the community. For businesses in San Diego, this could mean featuring coastal landscapes, architectural icons like the Coronado Bridge, or vibrant nods to the area's Mexican-American heritage.

3–5. Add Energy, Typography, and Depth

Abstract murals with bold shapes and dynamic colors can inject energy into a boardroom or lobby. Inspiring quotes, brand slogans, or mission statements can be the focal point of a mural — choosing the right font, layout, and background turns simple words into powerful design. Large-scale murals add visual drama that standard framed art or paint can't achieve.

6–10. Define Zones, Brand Colors, Artistry, Lighting & Engagement

Murals can help define zones within open-concept lobbies without the need for physical barriers. Custom murals don't have to be loud — subtle, refined patterns in your brand's palette can reinforce identity without overwhelming the space. Hand-painted murals add a level of craftsmanship and uniqueness that printed graphics sometimes lack. Strategic lighting can elevate the visual impact of your design. For client-facing businesses, creating a mural that encourages photos or engagement can expand your reach organically through social media.

Boardrooms and lobbies should do more than just serve a function — they should reflect who you are as a business. With a custom mural, you can elevate your professional space from forgettable to unforgettable. Visit us at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108.

Wallpaper has officially made its comeback — and it's bigger, bolder, and more beautiful than ever. From modern geometrics to rich textures and custom prints, today's wallpaper is redefining how we decorate our spaces. Whether you're updating a cozy home office or designing a standout commercial space, wallpaper offers endless design opportunities.

1. It Adds Instant Personality

Paint may be simple, but wallpaper makes a statement. With thousands of patterns, colors, and textures available, wallpaper allows you to create a space that's truly unique. Want drama? Try a dark floral. Need energy? Go bold with a geometric. Looking for calm? A subtle linen-texture might be your perfect match.

2. It's Not Just for Walls

Wallpaper can be used in unexpected ways. Try it on ceilings, in backs of bookshelves, inside closets, or even as framed art. In commercial spaces, wallpaper creates a memorable first impression and helps define brand identity — from stylish salons to sleek office lobbies.

3. Technology Has Changed the Game

Modern wallpapers are easier to apply and remove than ever before. Many are peel-and-stick or strippable, making them ideal for renters or frequent re-decorators. There are also durable, wipeable options perfect for high-traffic areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and commercial interiors.

4 & 5. Designer's Secret Weapon & Sustainable Options

Designers love wallpaper for its ability to create depth, texture, and mood. In large-scale spaces, wallpaper can ground the room. In small areas, like powder rooms or hallways, it adds a surprising pop of interest. Many brands now offer eco-friendly wallpapers made with water-based inks and sustainable materials. For an ultra-personal touch, you can even commission custom designs — turning your walls into true works of art.

Wallpaper colors play a significant role in setting the mood and energy of a room. Each color has psychological effects that can influence emotions, productivity, and relaxation. Here's a breakdown of how different wallpaper colors impact mood and energy levels.

Warm Colors: Energizing & Invigorating

Red stimulates energy, passion, and appetite — best for dining rooms, living rooms, or creative spaces. Orange encourages enthusiasm, warmth, and sociability — works well in exercise rooms or kitchens. Yellow evokes happiness, optimism, and mental clarity — ideal for kitchens, entryways, and sunrooms but should be used sparingly to avoid overwhelming the senses.

Cool Colors: Calming & Relaxing

Blue promotes tranquility, focus, and relaxation — perfect for bedrooms, offices, and bathrooms. Green symbolizes balance, harmony, and renewal — ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices. Purple represents luxury, creativity, and introspection — softer shades like lavender are great for relaxation, while deep purples add drama and sophistication.

Neutral & Dark Colors

White enhances cleanliness, openness, and simplicity — works well in any room but can feel sterile without accents. Gray encourages balance, sophistication, and calmness — a versatile choice for modern interiors. Beige and tan are warm, comforting, and grounding. Black adds elegance, depth, and mystery — best used as an accent or in well-lit, spacious rooms.

Choosing the Right Color for Your Space

For relaxation: soft blues, greens, and pastels. For energy: yellows, oranges, and reds. For focus and productivity: cool neutrals, blues, and greens. For luxury and drama: deep jewel tones or black accents.

Designing your interior should be an exciting and enjoyable journey, not a stressful task. It's all about expressing your personality, exploring colors and styles you love, and creating a space that truly feels like home. Take it one step at a time, trust your instincts, and remember: it's okay to make changes along the way.

Creating an accent wall with wallpaper is a fantastic way to add depth, personality, and visual interest to a room. Here are some steps and tips to help you achieve the best results.

1. Choose the Right Wall

Pick a wall that naturally draws attention, such as the one behind a bed, sofa, or dining table. Ensure the accent wall doesn't overpower the room — it should enhance the space, not dominate it.

2. Select the Wallpaper

Choose a color that complements the room's existing palette. For a bolder statement, go for a contrasting color. Depending on your style, you can choose anything from subtle textures to bold patterns — geometric shapes, florals, or abstract designs can all work depending on the room's decor. Wallpapers come in various finishes: matte, glossy, metallic, or textured.

3. Measure, Prepare & Apply

Calculate the square footage of the wall to ensure you buy enough wallpaper, considering the pattern repeat. The wall should be clean, smooth, and dry — repair any holes or imperfections before you start. If your wallpaper has a complex pattern, starting from the center can help balance the design. Pay attention to pattern alignment to ensure continuity across strips. Smooth out any bubbles as you go to ensure a professional finish.

4. Consider Lighting & Accessorize Thoughtfully

Consider how the wallpaper will look in different lighting conditions. Some wallpapers may appear different during the day compared to at night. Use furniture, artwork, and decor that complements the accent wall without overwhelming it. Ensure that the rest of the room's decor ties in with the accent wall to create a cohesive look.

By thoughtfully selecting and applying wallpaper to an accent wall, you can create a striking feature that enhances the overall design of your space. Have fun creating! Visit our showroom at 2667 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92108.

You don't have to make big changes to capture the essence of summer! Summer colors in home decor are just about bringing that bright, fresh, airy feel to your living space. Here are some popular summer color schemes and decor ideas.

Bright and Bold Colors

Sunshine yellow brings warmth and energy into a space — ideal for accents like throw pillows, rugs, or feature walls. Coral and peach add a soft, yet lively touch to interiors — they work well in living rooms and bedrooms. Turquoise and aqua evoke the refreshing feel of the ocean — perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, or any space needing a cool vibe.

Pastel Shades & Neutral Tones

Soft pink adds a gentle, romantic touch — suitable for bedrooms and living areas. Mint green is refreshing and calming — ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or bedrooms. Lavender provides a light, airy feel — great for bedrooms and sitting areas. Sand and beige neutrals can evoke the feeling of a beach, creating a warm, inviting space. White is classic and timeless — it can make any room feel larger and more open.

Natural Greens & Blues

Leaf green brings the outdoors inside, creating a vibrant and natural feel — great for living rooms and kitchens. Sage green is a softer, muted green that adds a touch of nature without being overwhelming. Sky blue is light and airy, perfect for creating a serene and relaxing atmosphere in any room. Navy blue provides contrast and sophistication, especially in accents or furniture.

Tips for Implementation

Start small: if you're unsure about a bold color, start with smaller items like cushions or vases. Balance: mix bright colors with neutral tones to avoid overwhelming the space. Seasonal switch: consider swapping out heavier winter textiles for lighter summer ones. Layering: use a combination of these colors in different textures and patterns to add depth and interest to a room.

By carefully selecting and combining these colors, you can create a summer-inspired interior that feels vibrant, inviting, and refreshing. Have fun, start small and bring on the summer!

A split complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. It involves choosing one base color and then using the two colors adjacent to its complementary color on the color wheel. This scheme provides high contrast like a complementary color scheme, but with less tension.

How to Create a Split Complementary Color Scheme

Choose a base color — this will be your starting point. Find the complementary color — locate the color directly opposite your base color on the color wheel. Select the split complements — instead of using the direct complementary color, choose the two colors adjacent to it. For example: if your base color is blue, the complementary color is orange. The split complementary colors would be yellow-orange and red-orange.

Why It Works in Interior Design

Balance and harmony: split complementary schemes offer a balance between contrast and harmony. By choosing a base color and the two colors adjacent to its complement, you get a palette that is visually interesting without being too jarring. This helps create a sense of balance in a space, making it feel well-coordinated and harmonious.

Visual interest: these schemes provide a more complex and nuanced color combination compared to a simple complementary scheme. The added variety can make a room feel more dynamic and engaging, avoiding monotony and adding depth to the design.

Flexibility: split complementary schemes offer flexibility in design. You can adjust the intensity and saturation of the colors to suit different moods and styles, from vibrant and energetic to soft and calming. For those not professionally trained in color theory, split complementary schemes are relatively easy to implement successfully.

Creating Focal Points and Depth

By using the base color predominantly and the two adjacent colors as accents, you can create effective focal points in a room. This technique can highlight specific areas or features, adding structure and guiding the eye through the space. Using a split complementary scheme can add depth and dimension to a room — the contrast between the base color and the accent colors helps create a layered look, making the space feel more three-dimensional and lively.

In summary, split complementary color schemes provide a versatile and visually appealing approach to interior design, balancing contrast and harmony to create spaces that are both interesting and cohesive. Creativity takes courage — have fun with it!

Grasscloth has been steadily growing in popularity for several reasons: its natural origin gives it a unique and appealing texture that adds warmth and depth to a space. The irregularities and variations in the fibers contribute to its organic and authentic appearance.

Natural Texture and Variety

Grasscloth is made from natural fibers, typically derived from grasses, reeds, and other plants. It comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, allowing for versatile design options. The natural fibers absorb dyes differently, creating subtle variations in color that add visual interest to the material. The patterns can range from simple weaves to more complex designs, offering choices that suit various design preferences.

Environmental Appeal and Sustainability

With a growing emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable materials, grasscloth has gained popularity because it is often considered a more environmentally friendly option compared to synthetic wallcoverings. The use of natural fibers aligns with the increasing demand for sustainable and renewable resources in interior design.

Timeless Elegance and Acoustic Benefits

Grasscloth has a classic and timeless quality that transcends design trends. Its natural appeal has made it a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary interiors, contributing to its enduring popularity over the years. Each roll of grasscloth is unique due to the natural variations in the fibers — no two installations will be exactly alike. The textured nature of grasscloth can also contribute to improved acoustics in a room by helping to absorb sound, which is particularly beneficial in spaces where reducing echo and noise is a priority.

Using wallpaper with large prints or patterns in small spaces can be a clever design strategy to enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the area. Here are some ways in which large prints can benefit tiny spaces.

Illusion of Space and Focal Points

Large prints create the illusion of more space. The eye is naturally drawn to the prominent artwork, making the room appear larger than it actually is. This optical trickery can be especially useful in small bedrooms, bathrooms, or hallways. A large print also serves as a focal point in a room, drawing attention away from the limited size of the space — it can become a conversation starter and distract from the small dimensions of the room.

Depth, Dimension, and Personality

Oversized prints and patterns in wallpaper add depth and dimension to a room. Choose prints that have intricate details or perspective, giving the impression of an expansive environment. Large prints allow you to express your personality and style in a small space — whether it's a bold, colorful piece or a minimalist design, the artwork can define the ambiance of the room.

Reduced Clutter and Vertical Space

Instead of cluttering a small space with numerous small decorations, a large print can make a powerful statement while maintaining a sense of simplicity and avoiding visual clutter. In rooms with limited floor space, utilizing vertical space with a large print can draw the eye upward, creating the feeling of a taller and more spacious environment. When incorporating large prints into a small space, it's essential to strike a balance — consider the overall design scheme, color palette, and the impact of the artwork on the perceived size of the room.

The term "cityscapes in interiors" suggests incorporating elements of cityscape views or urban landscapes within interior design. This concept involves bringing aspects of the city, such as skyline views, architectural elements, or urban aesthetics, into the design of interior spaces.

Murals, Windows, and Architectural Elements

Incorporate large windows or glass walls that offer panoramic views of the cityscape, allowing the exterior environment to become a part of the interior design. Use murals or wallpaper featuring cityscapes to create an illusion of being surrounded by urban landscapes — this can be applied to accent walls or entire rooms. Integrate architectural elements inspired by city structures: exposed brick walls, industrial-style lighting fixtures, or steel beams can evoke an urban feel.

Industrial Materials and Urban Color Palettes

Choose materials commonly associated with urban environments, such as concrete, metal, or reclaimed wood. These materials can contribute to an industrial or loft-like atmosphere. Select furniture pieces that reflect a modern or urban aesthetic — sleek, minimalist designs or furniture with clean lines can contribute to the overall cityscape theme. Choose a color palette inspired by the city, such as grays, blacks, and whites, accented with pops of vibrant colors reminiscent of city lights.

Open Layouts and Balance

Create open and flexible layouts that mimic the spaciousness often associated with urban lofts. This can enhance the feeling of being immersed in a city environment. Remember that the key to successfully incorporating cityscapes into interiors is to strike a balance between the urban elements and the overall functionality and comfort of the space. Whether subtle or bold, these design choices can help create a unique and inspiring interior that reflects the energy of the city.

In design, the concept of "shades of grey" can be interpreted in various ways, both literally and metaphorically. Using various shades of grey in a color palette can create a sophisticated and timeless design. Grey is often associated with neutrality and can serve as a subtle background that allows other colors to stand out.

Material, Texture, and Visual Hierarchy

In interior design, different shades of grey materials — such as concrete, metal, or textiles — can add depth and visual interest. The interplay of light and shadow on these surfaces can create a dynamic and elegant effect. Designers often use a range of tones, including different shades of grey, to establish a visual hierarchy. Lighter elements may draw more attention, while darker or muted elements recede into the background.

Mood, Atmosphere, and Emotional Impact

Different shades of grey can evoke different emotions. Lighter greys may create a calm and airy atmosphere, while darker greys can convey sophistication and formality. The careful selection of grey tones can contribute significantly to the overall mood of a design. In photography or other visual elements, using various shades of grey can create a monochromatic or grayscale effect that evokes a sense of nostalgia, drama, or timelessness.

Versatility and Accessibility

Grey is one of the most versatile colors in the designer's toolkit. It pairs beautifully with virtually every other color — from warm terracottas and blush tones to cool blues and greens. Ensuring sufficient contrast between text and background colors is also crucial for accessibility, and using shades of grey thoughtfully can help meet accessibility standards and make designs more inclusive. In summary, the use of shades of grey in design is a nuanced and versatile approach that extends beyond mere color choices.

Black and white are powerful and versatile elements in design, with a significant visual impact. The most apparent impact of black and white is the strong contrast they create. This high contrast makes elements stand out and draws attention — it can be particularly effective in emphasizing specific parts of a design or guiding the viewer's focus.

Clarity, Simplicity, and Timelessness

Black and white designs often convey a sense of simplicity and clarity. Without the distraction of color, the focus is on the forms, shapes, and composition. This simplicity can enhance the overall legibility and understanding of the design. Black and white designs also have a classic and timeless quality — they often transcend trends and remain visually appealing over time, making them a popular choice for projects that aim for a long-lasting and elegant aesthetic.

Drama, Elegance, and Texture

Black and white can evoke strong emotions and drama. The stark contrast can create a sense of intensity, seriousness, or mystery — a popular choice in photography, film, and graphic design to convey a range of emotions effectively. Black and white are associated with sophistication and elegance, and many high-end brands use them in their logos and branding to convey a sense of luxury and refinement. Without the distraction of color, black and white designs allow for a heightened focus on texture and shape, which can be particularly effective in highlighting intricate details or creating visually interesting patterns.

Versatility and Artistic Expression

Black and white designs are versatile and can be adapted to various styles and themes. Whether it's a modern, minimalist look or a vintage, retro vibe, black and white can be molded to suit different design preferences. Many artists and designers choose to work in black and white to explore the interplay of light and shadow, form, and composition — it provides a unique and often striking platform for artistic expression. In conclusion, the visual impact of black and white in design is broad and diverse, offering a range of possibilities to convey messages, evoke emotions, and create visually appealing and timeless aesthetics.

Color theory is a conceptual framework used to understand and manipulate the use of color in visual arts and design. It encompasses a range of principles and guidelines that help artists, designers, and other visual creators make informed decisions about color selection and combination.

The Color Wheel and Primary Colors

A circular diagram that arranges colors based on their chromatic relationship, the most common color wheel consists of primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), secondary colors (green, orange, and purple), and tertiary colors (the result of mixing a primary color with a secondary color). Primary colors are the foundational colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors. Secondary colors are formed by mixing equal parts of two primary colors — green (blue + yellow), orange (red + yellow), and purple (red + blue).

Complementary, Analogous, and Triadic Colors

Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel — when used together, they create a high contrast and vibrant effect. Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel and usually match well, creating serene and comfortable designs. Triadic colors are three colors evenly spaced around the color wheel, providing high contrast while retaining color richness. Split-complementary schemes involve choosing a base color and using the two colors adjacent to its complementary color.

Warm, Cool, and Monochromatic Schemes

Colors are often categorized as warm (reds, oranges, yellows) or cool (blues, greens, purples). Warm colors tend to evoke energy and warmth, while cool colors suggest calmness and serenity. A monochromatic color scheme uses variations in lightness and saturation of a single color, creating a harmonious and unified look. Understanding color theory helps artists and designers create visually appealing and effective compositions — it's a valuable tool for achieving balance, harmony, and emotional impact in visual communication.

Taking care of wallpaper is essential to ensure its longevity and maintain its appearance. With the right approach, your wallcovering can look beautiful for many years to come.

Regular Cleaning and Spot Treatment

Dust your wallpaper regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Avoid using abrasive materials or rough sponges that could damage the wallpaper surface. Address any stains or marks promptly to prevent them from setting into the wallpaper. Use a mild cleaning solution appropriate for the wallpaper type, and test the solution in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the wallpaper.

Protecting from Sunlight and Scratches

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and damage wallpaper. Use curtains or blinds to protect your wallpaper from excessive sunlight. Be cautious when moving furniture or objects near wallpapered walls to prevent scratches and tears. If your wallpaper has a protective coating, use a cleaning product recommended by the manufacturer. For delicate or non-washable wallpapers, dry cleaning methods may be more suitable.

Repairs and Professional Care

If your wallpaper does get damaged, try to repair it as soon as possible using a matching piece or pattern, if available. If the damage is extensive, you may need to consider replacing the entire section. For valuable or delicate wallpapers, consider consulting a professional cleaner to ensure proper care. Always follow the care and maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer — this is particularly important because different types of wallpaper may require different care approaches. To prevent damage, use wallpaper-friendly adhesives and follow proper installation techniques.

The lifespan of a wallpaper can vary depending on several factors, including the quality of the wallpaper material, installation method, and environmental conditions. Understanding these factors can help you make the best choice for your space.

Material Quality and Installation

High-quality wallpaper made from durable materials tends to have a longer lifespan. Vinyl and fabric wallpapers, for example, are often more durable than paper-based wallpapers. Proper installation is crucial for the longevity of wallpaper — if it's installed correctly, with the right adhesives and techniques, it can last longer. Poorly installed wallpaper may peel, bubble, or become damaged more easily.

Environmental Conditions and Maintenance

The environment in which the wallpaper is placed also affects its lifespan. Areas with high humidity, direct sunlight, or extreme temperature fluctuations can impact the wallpaper over time. For instance, in bathrooms where there's a lot of moisture, wallpapers might not last as long as they would in a drier environment. How you clean and maintain your wallpaper can also influence its lifespan — some wallpapers are washable, while others are not. Using harsh cleaning agents or abrasive cleaning tools may damage the wallpaper.

How Long Can You Expect It to Last?

Generally, well-installed and properly maintained wallpaper can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years or more. However, it's important to note that design trends and personal preferences often prompt people to change wallpapers before any physical deterioration occurs. Aesthetic trends and personal preferences can also impact the perceived lifespan of wallpaper — if you redecorate frequently or if your taste changes, you may choose to replace the wallpaper sooner. The good news is that modern wallcoverings are more durable than ever, making them a sound long-term investment.

Wall decals, also known as wall stickers or wall graphics, offer several upsides that make them a popular choice for home decor. Most come with a peel-and-stick design, eliminating the need for additional tools or adhesives — making them a convenient and quick way to update the look of a room.

Removability and Variety

Unlike traditional wallpaper or paint, wall decals are usually removable without causing damage to the wall surface. This makes them an excellent option for renters or people who like to change their decor frequently. Wall decals come in a wide range of designs, styles, and sizes — whether you prefer geometric patterns, nature scenes, quotes, or custom designs, you can find a wall decal to suit your taste and complement your home decor.

Affordability and Customization

Wall decals are often more affordable than other wall decor options such as custom murals or wallpaper. This makes them a budget-friendly choice for those looking to enhance their living space without a significant financial investment. Many companies offer customizable wall decals, allowing you to choose the color, size, and sometimes even the design. This level of customization enables you to create a personalized and unique look for your space.

Versatility and DIY Appeal

Wall decals can be applied to various surfaces, including painted walls, glass, metal, and even furniture. This versatility allows you to get creative with where you place them in your home. The application of wall decals is a do-it-yourself project that doesn't require professional help — this DIY aspect can be appealing to those who enjoy hands-on home improvement projects. Applying wall decals typically doesn't involve any mess or strong odors, unlike painting or using certain adhesives. They're also a great way to create thematic decor for events or special occasions without the long-term commitment.

Fabric wallcoverings are one of the most luxurious and tactile options available for residential and commercial interiors. Unlike vinyl or paper-based products, fabric wallcoverings bring a warmth and depth to a space that is immediately felt upon entering the room.

Types of Fabric Wallcoverings

Fabric wallcoverings encompass a wide range of materials — from woven linens and silks to wool blends, cotton, and synthetic performance textiles. Natural fiber options like linen and silk offer a refined, organic aesthetic, while performance-backed fabrics are engineered for high-traffic commercial environments where durability and cleanability are paramount.

Acoustic and Thermal Benefits

One of the most compelling reasons to choose fabric wallcoverings is their acoustic performance. The soft, porous nature of fabric absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, reducing echo and improving the overall acoustic quality of a space. This makes fabric wallcoverings an excellent choice for home theaters, offices, restaurants, and hospitality environments. Many fabric wallcoverings also provide a degree of thermal insulation, helping to regulate room temperature.

Installation and Care

Fabric wallcoverings typically require professional installation, as the material must be carefully aligned and adhered to avoid bubbling, sagging, or pattern mismatches. Many modern fabric wallcoverings come pre-backed with a paper or acrylic substrate to simplify installation and improve durability. Care requirements vary by material — some can be gently spot-cleaned, while others require professional cleaning. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and consult with your installer about the best maintenance approach for your specific product.

Selecting the right wallcovering for a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room requires a different approach than choosing for a bedroom or living area. Moisture, steam, and temperature fluctuations can wreak havoc on the wrong product — but the right choice will hold up beautifully for years.

Why Moisture Matters

High humidity causes paper-based wallpapers to absorb moisture, which leads to bubbling, peeling, and mold growth behind the wall surface. Even products that appear fine initially may begin to fail after repeated exposure to steam from showers or cooking. Understanding how your chosen material responds to moisture is the single most important factor when selecting a wallcovering for these spaces.

Best Materials for Humid Environments

Vinyl wallcoverings are the gold standard for high-humidity rooms. Their non-porous surface resists moisture absorption and can be wiped clean easily. Type II vinyl, in particular, offers excellent durability and is widely used in commercial kitchens and hospitality bathrooms. Non-woven wallpapers are another strong option — their synthetic fiber base resists moisture better than traditional paper and is less prone to tearing during removal. Some manufacturers also produce specially treated grasscloth and natural fiber products designed for moderate humidity, though these are best reserved for powder rooms rather than full bathrooms.

Installation Tips for Wet Areas

Proper surface preparation is critical in humid rooms. Walls should be primed with a moisture-resistant primer before installation, and all seams should be sealed with a compatible seam sealer to prevent moisture infiltration. Ensure adequate ventilation in the room — an exhaust fan that properly vents to the exterior will significantly extend the life of any wallcovering. Avoid installing wallpaper directly adjacent to a shower or tub without a proper tile or waterproof barrier between the wet zone and the wallcovering. When in doubt, consult with a professional installer who has experience with wet-area applications.

One of the most technically demanding aspects of wallpaper installation is pattern matching. A beautifully designed wallpaper can look amateurish if the pattern doesn't align properly at the seams — and conversely, a perfectly matched installation elevates even a simple design into something that looks truly intentional and professional.

Understanding Repeat Types

Wallpaper patterns are categorized by their repeat type, which determines how strips must be aligned during installation. A straight match means the pattern repeats horizontally across the wall — each strip aligns directly with the one beside it at the same height. A drop match (also called a half-drop) means the pattern on each successive strip is offset, typically by half the repeat height. Drop matches are common in large-scale botanical, geometric, and damask designs. Free-match patterns, such as textures and stripes, require no alignment and are the most forgiving to install.

Calculating Waste and Planning Your Layout

Patterns with a large repeat require more material because each strip must be cut to start at the same point in the pattern. A 24-inch vertical repeat, for example, means you may waste up to 23 inches of material per strip to achieve a proper match. When ordering wallpaper with a large repeat, always add at least 15–20% to your square footage calculation to account for this waste. Before you begin installation, lay out your strips on the floor to plan the pattern placement — decide where you want the pattern to fall at eye level and work outward from a focal point such as a fireplace or centered window.

Professional Tips for Clean Seams

Always use a sharp blade when trimming strips — a dull blade drags and tears the paper, creating ragged edges that are impossible to match cleanly. Butt seams (where strips meet edge to edge without overlapping) produce the most invisible result on most wallpapers. Double-cut seams are preferred for thicker materials or when working with pre-pasted products. Keep a damp sponge nearby to immediately wipe away any adhesive that squeezes out at the seams — dried adhesive creates a visible sheen on the wall surface. If you're unsure about tackling a complex pattern match yourself, a professional installer will save you both material and frustration.

Commercial wallcoverings are a category unto themselves. Engineered to withstand the demands of high-traffic environments — hotels, healthcare facilities, corporate offices, restaurants, and retail spaces — they must meet performance standards that residential products simply aren't designed to achieve.

Performance Standards and Classifications

In the United States, commercial wallcoverings are classified under ASTM standards into three types based on weight and durability. Type I wallcoverings weigh at least 12 oz per linear yard and are suitable for moderate-traffic areas such as private offices and hotel guest rooms. Type II products weigh at least 20 oz per linear yard and are appropriate for high-traffic corridors, lobbies, and healthcare settings. Type III wallcoverings are the heaviest and most durable, designed for extreme-use environments such as stairwells, service corridors, and industrial spaces.

Fire Ratings and Code Compliance

Commercial wallcoverings installed in public buildings must comply with local fire codes, which typically require products to meet Class A (or Class 1) flame spread ratings per ASTM E84. Always verify that the product you specify carries the appropriate fire rating for the jurisdiction and occupancy type. Reputable commercial wallcovering manufacturers provide full documentation of their products' fire test results, and your installer or design professional can help you navigate the code requirements for your specific project.

Cleanability and Maintenance

One of the most important performance attributes of a commercial wallcovering is its cleanability. In healthcare and food service environments, surfaces must be able to withstand repeated cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants without degrading. Look for products rated as scrubbable rather than merely washable — scrubbable products can withstand vigorous cleaning with a brush, while washable products are only suitable for gentle wiping. Many commercial vinyl wallcoverings also carry antimicrobial treatments that inhibit the growth of bacteria and mold on the wall surface, an important consideration for healthcare and hospitality applications.

A mural wallpaper is fundamentally different from a repeating pattern — instead of a tile that repeats across the wall, a mural is a single continuous image printed across multiple panels that together form one cohesive composition. The effect can be breathtaking, transforming an ordinary wall into a statement that defines the entire room.

Choosing the Right Image

The most important decision in a mural installation is the image itself. Consider the scale of the room and the distance from which the mural will be viewed — a highly detailed image works beautifully in a long hallway where viewers pass close to the wall, while a bold, graphic composition with fewer fine details reads better across a large open room. Think about the mood you want to create: a sweeping landscape evokes calm and expansiveness, a dense botanical print feels lush and immersive, and an abstract geometric composition adds energy and modernity.

Custom vs. Stock Murals

Many manufacturers offer stock mural designs that can be scaled to fit your wall dimensions — these are an excellent value and are available in an enormous range of styles. Custom murals, where an original artwork or photograph is adapted and printed specifically for your project, offer complete creative freedom but require more lead time and a higher investment. For branded commercial environments, custom murals featuring company imagery, brand colors, or original artwork can create a powerful and memorable impression on clients and employees alike.

Installation Considerations

Mural wallpapers are typically printed on non-woven or vinyl substrates and shipped as a set of numbered panels. The panels must be installed in sequence, with careful attention to alignment at each seam. Unlike a repeating pattern where a misalignment is corrected on the next strip, a mural seam error propagates across the entire installation — making professional installation strongly recommended. Ensure your wall surface is perfectly smooth, primed, and free of imperfections before installation, as any surface irregularities will be visible through the mural. Most manufacturers provide detailed installation instructions specific to their product.

Non-woven wallpaper has quietly become the industry standard for professional installations over the past decade. Made from a blend of natural and synthetic fibers bonded together without weaving, non-woven wallpaper offers a combination of performance attributes that traditional paper simply can't match.

Dimensional Stability

The most significant advantage of non-woven wallpaper is its dimensional stability. Traditional paper wallpaper expands when wet with adhesive and contracts as it dries, which causes seams to open and patterns to misalign. Non-woven wallpaper is virtually dimensionally stable — it doesn't expand or contract with moisture, which means seams stay tight and patterns stay aligned throughout the installation and drying process. This makes non-woven products significantly easier to install and produces a more professional result.

Paste-the-Wall Installation

Non-woven wallpapers are typically installed using a paste-the-wall method, where adhesive is applied directly to the wall surface rather than to the back of the paper. This eliminates the need for a pasting table and soaking time, making the installation process faster and cleaner. It also means you can hang one strip at a time without worrying about the remaining strips drying out while you work — a significant advantage in large rooms or complex installations.

Easy Removal and Breathability

When it's time to redecorate, non-woven wallpaper removes cleanly and dry in a single piece — no soaking, no scraping, no damage to the wall surface. This is a major advantage over traditional paper wallpaper, which often requires significant effort and wall repair after removal. Non-woven wallpaper is also breathable, allowing moisture vapor to pass through the wall surface rather than trapping it behind the wallcovering. This reduces the risk of mold and mildew growth, making non-woven products a healthier choice for bedrooms and living areas.

A child's room is one of the most rewarding spaces to wallpaper — the design possibilities are virtually limitless, and the right wallcovering can spark imagination and create a space your child will love for years. But kids' rooms also present unique challenges: durability, cleanability, and the reality that tastes change quickly as children grow.

Prioritize Durability and Cleanability

Children's rooms see more wall contact than virtually any other space in the home — crayon marks, sticky fingers, and the occasional scuff from a toy or backpack are inevitable. Choose a wallpaper rated as scrubbable rather than merely washable, and look for products with a protective vinyl or acrylic coating that can withstand repeated cleaning. Non-woven and vinyl-backed wallpapers are the most practical choices for children's spaces. Avoid delicate natural fiber products like grasscloth or silk in rooms that will see heavy use.

Design Strategies That Grow With Your Child

One of the most common regrets parents have with children's room wallpaper is choosing a design that's too age-specific — a toddler-themed pattern that feels out of place by the time the child is seven. Consider using a more timeless design on the majority of the walls and reserving a single accent wall for a bolder, more playful pattern that can be replaced more easily as tastes evolve. Geometric patterns, subtle botanicals, and classic stripes tend to have longer design lifespans than character-based or highly themed prints.

Safety Considerations

When selecting wallpaper for a child's room, look for products that are free from harmful chemicals such as PVC, phthalates, and heavy-metal-based pigments. Many reputable manufacturers now offer products certified under GREENGUARD Gold or similar indoor air quality standards, which are specifically designed for environments where children spend significant time. Water-based adhesives are preferable to solvent-based products for the same reason. Ask your wallcovering specialist about the VOC content and certifications of any product you're considering for a child's space.

Texture is one of the most powerful tools in an interior designer's toolkit, yet it's often the last element considered in a room design. While color and pattern tend to dominate the conversation, texture is what makes a space feel truly alive — it adds depth, warmth, and a tactile quality that engages the senses in a way that flat surfaces simply cannot.

Visual vs. Tactile Texture

In interior design, texture operates on two levels: visual texture, which is perceived by the eye, and tactile texture, which is felt by touch. A photograph of a rough stone wall creates visual texture — the eye reads the surface as dimensional even though the image itself is flat. A grasscloth wallcovering, by contrast, provides both visual and tactile texture — you can see the woven fibers and feel their irregularity when you run your hand across the surface. The most compelling interiors typically layer both types of texture to create spaces that reward both looking and touching.

How Texture Affects Light and Mood

Texture has a profound effect on how light behaves in a room. Smooth, reflective surfaces bounce light around the space, making it feel brighter and more energetic. Rough, matte surfaces absorb light, creating a sense of warmth, intimacy, and calm. This is why a room with textured wallcoverings often feels cozier and more inviting than an identical room with smooth painted walls — the texture absorbs some of the light and creates subtle shadows that give the space a sense of depth and dimension.

Layering Textures Successfully

The key to successfully layering textures in a room is contrast — pairing rough with smooth, matte with shiny, soft with hard. A room where every surface has the same texture feels flat and monotonous, even if the individual materials are beautiful. Try pairing a deeply textured grasscloth wallcovering with smooth lacquered furniture, or a dimensional raised-pattern wallpaper with sleek polished stone floors. The contrast between the textures makes each one more interesting and creates a space that feels considered and layered rather than one-dimensional.

Wallpaper removal has a reputation as one of the most dreaded home improvement tasks — and in some cases, that reputation is deserved. But with the right tools, the right technique, and a realistic understanding of what you're working with, the process can be far more manageable than most people expect.

Know What You're Removing

The difficulty of wallpaper removal depends heavily on the type of wallpaper, the type of adhesive used, and the condition of the wall surface beneath. Modern non-woven wallpapers typically remove cleanly and dry in a single piece — simply score the edge, find a seam, and peel. Traditional paper wallpapers and older vinyl products are more challenging and usually require soaking with water or a removal solution to soften the adhesive before the paper can be peeled away. The worst-case scenario is old wallpaper that was installed directly over unprimed drywall — in this case, removing the paper often damages the drywall face, requiring significant repair work.

Tools and Solutions

For most removal projects, you'll need a scoring tool (used carefully to perforate the wallpaper surface without gouging the wall), a pump sprayer or sponge for applying water or removal solution, a wide plastic scraper for lifting the softened paper, and plenty of drop cloths to protect your floors. Commercial wallpaper removal solutions contain surfactants that help water penetrate the paper and adhesive more effectively than plain water alone. A wallpaper steamer is the most effective tool for stubborn installations, particularly on plaster walls, but requires care to avoid damaging the wall surface.

Preparing the Wall After Removal

Once the wallpaper is removed, the wall surface will almost certainly require some preparation before new wallcovering can be installed. Residual adhesive must be washed off completely — any remaining adhesive will prevent new wallpaper from adhering properly and can cause staining. Small tears and gouges in the drywall face should be repaired with joint compound and sanded smooth. The entire wall should then be primed with a wallpaper-specific primer before installation. Skipping the priming step is one of the most common mistakes in wallpaper installation and leads to adhesion failures and difficult future removal.

Botanical wallpaper — featuring plants, flowers, leaves, and natural landscapes — has been a fixture of interior design for centuries. From the hand-painted chinoiserie panels of 18th-century European palaces to the maximalist jungle prints of today's most-photographed interiors, the appeal of bringing the natural world indoors through wallcovering has proven remarkably enduring.

Why Botanicals Endure

The enduring appeal of botanical wallpaper is rooted in something deeper than fashion — it speaks to a fundamental human desire to connect with the natural world. Research in environmental psychology consistently shows that exposure to natural imagery reduces stress, improves mood, and increases feelings of well-being. A room with a lush botanical wallcovering provides a daily dose of that connection, even in the most urban of environments. This biophilic quality gives botanical designs a staying power that purely abstract or geometric patterns often lack.

Styles Within the Category

The botanical category encompasses an enormous range of styles, from the delicate and precise to the bold and graphic. Traditional botanical illustrations — rendered in fine detail with a scientific accuracy reminiscent of 19th-century naturalist drawings — bring a refined, intellectual quality to a space. Large-scale tropical prints with oversized leaves and vivid colors create an immersive, maximalist effect. Soft watercolor botanicals in muted, dusty tones feel romantic and ethereal. Understanding which style of botanical suits your space and your aesthetic is the key to a successful installation.

Pairing Botanicals with Other Elements

Botanical wallpapers pair beautifully with natural materials — rattan, linen, jute, and wood all complement the organic quality of plant-based imagery. For a more contemporary look, pair a bold botanical print with sleek, minimal furniture in solid colors drawn from the wallpaper's palette. Avoid competing patterns in the same room — let the botanical be the star and keep other textiles and surfaces relatively quiet. Lighting plays an important role as well: warm, incandescent-toned light enhances the richness of botanical colors, while cool daylight can make them feel fresh and vibrant.

Geometric wallpaper occupies a unique position in the design world — it is simultaneously one of the most ancient and one of the most contemporary of all pattern types. From the intricate tilework of Moorish architecture to the bold Op Art prints of the 1960s to today's sophisticated three-dimensional geometric wallcoverings, the geometric impulse in design has never gone out of style.

The Power of Pattern and Scale

The impact of a geometric wallpaper is determined largely by its scale. Small-scale geometric patterns — fine herringbones, delicate diamonds, subtle grid patterns — read almost as textures from a distance and add visual interest without overwhelming a space. They're particularly effective in smaller rooms or as a backdrop for furniture-heavy spaces where the pattern needs to recede. Large-scale geometric patterns, by contrast, make an immediate and powerful statement — they command attention and define the character of a room from the moment you enter.

Color and Contrast in Geometric Design

Color choices dramatically affect the mood of a geometric wallpaper. High-contrast geometric patterns — black and white, navy and gold, deep forest green and cream — feel bold, graphic, and energetic. Low-contrast geometric patterns in tonal colorways — soft grey on white, warm taupe on ivory — feel sophisticated and refined without the visual intensity of high-contrast versions. Metallic geometric wallpapers, where the pattern is rendered in gold, silver, or copper on a matte ground, add glamour and a sense of luxury that works beautifully in dining rooms, powder rooms, and master bedrooms.

Mixing Geometric with Other Patterns

One of the most common questions about geometric wallpaper is whether it can be mixed with other patterns in the same space. The answer is yes — but with care. The key to successful pattern mixing is varying the scale: pair a large-scale geometric wallpaper with small-scale patterns in textiles, or use a fine geometric wallpaper as a backdrop for bolder patterned upholstery. Keep the color palette consistent across the patterns to create cohesion. Avoid mixing two patterns of similar scale, as they will compete with each other and create visual confusion rather than the layered richness you're aiming for.

One of the most common questions we hear from clients is whether to wallpaper a single accent wall or commit to a full-room installation. Both approaches have genuine merit, and the right choice depends on the specific room, the pattern you've chosen, and the effect you want to achieve.

The Case for an Accent Wall

An accent wall is an excellent choice when you want to introduce a bold or complex pattern without overwhelming the space. A single wallpapered wall creates a focal point that draws the eye and anchors the room's design, while the remaining painted walls provide visual breathing room. Accent walls are also a more budget-friendly option, requiring less material and less installation time. They're particularly effective in bedrooms, where the wall behind the headboard is a natural focal point, and in dining rooms, where a single dramatic wall can transform the entire atmosphere of the space.

The Case for Full-Room Wallpaper

A full-room wallpaper installation creates an immersive, enveloping effect that an accent wall simply cannot achieve. When all four walls are covered, the pattern becomes the architecture of the room — it defines the space completely and creates a sense of being inside the design rather than looking at it. Full-room installations work particularly well with smaller-scale patterns, textures, and tone-on-tone designs that read as a unified surface rather than a competing element. They're also the right choice for rooms where there is no single obvious focal wall, such as square rooms or spaces with windows and doors on multiple walls.

Making the Decision

When deciding between an accent wall and a full-room installation, consider the scale of the pattern first. Large-scale, high-contrast patterns often work better as accent walls — surrounding yourself with a very bold pattern on all four walls can feel overwhelming. Smaller-scale patterns, textures, and subtle designs are generally more successful as full-room installations. Also consider the architecture of the room: a room with beautiful moldings, built-ins, or other architectural features may benefit from a full-room installation that ties all the elements together, while a simpler room may be better served by the focused impact of a single accent wall.

If there's one room in the house where wallpaper truly shines, it's the dining room. Dining rooms are typically used for shorter periods than living rooms or bedrooms, which means you can afford to be bolder and more dramatic with your design choices — a pattern that might feel overwhelming in a room you spend hours in every day can feel perfectly theatrical in a space reserved for meals and entertaining.

Why Dining Rooms Are Perfect for Wallpaper

Dining rooms are typically more formal than other living spaces, and wallpaper — with its associations of craftsmanship, pattern, and intentional design — reinforces that sense of occasion. A beautifully wallpapered dining room signals that this is a space where meals are meant to be savored and conversation is meant to linger. The relatively contained size of most dining rooms also makes them an economical choice for a full-room wallpaper installation, allowing you to use a more premium product without the cost of covering a large open-plan space.

Design Choices for Dining Rooms

Dining rooms can handle bolder, more dramatic patterns than almost any other room in the house. Deep, saturated colors — forest green, navy, burgundy, charcoal — feel rich and intimate in a dining setting, especially when paired with warm candlelight or pendant lighting. Chinoiserie panels, large-scale botanicals, and scenic murals are all classic dining room choices that create an immersive backdrop for entertaining. For a more contemporary approach, consider a large-scale geometric in a sophisticated colorway, or a textured grasscloth in a deep, earthy tone.

Practical Considerations

Dining rooms present some practical challenges for wallpaper: food and drink splashes, chair backs rubbing against the wall, and the steam from hot dishes can all take a toll on delicate materials. Choose a product with a protective coating that can be gently wiped clean, and consider installing a chair rail to protect the lower portion of the wall — the area most vulnerable to chair damage — with a more durable material such as beadboard or a Type II vinyl wallcovering. Ensure the room has adequate ventilation to prevent moisture from cooking from affecting the wallcovering over time.

San Diego occupies a unique position in the American design landscape. Its Mediterranean climate, proximity to the Pacific, and blend of Spanish Colonial, Craftsman, and contemporary architectural traditions create a design culture that is distinctly its own — neither the maximalist glamour of Los Angeles nor the spare minimalism of the Bay Area, but something warmer, more relaxed, and more connected to the natural environment.

Coastal Influences

The Pacific Ocean is never far from the San Diego design conversation. Coastal influences manifest in a preference for natural materials — grasscloth, linen, jute, and rattan — and a color palette drawn from the sea, sand, and sky: soft blues, warm whites, sandy taupes, and the deep sage green of coastal sage scrub. Wallcoverings that evoke the natural environment — textured grasscloths, botanical prints featuring native California plants, and soft watercolor-style patterns — are consistently popular across all price points.

Indoor-Outdoor Living

San Diego's year-round mild climate has made indoor-outdoor living a defining feature of local residential design. Wallcoverings that bridge the gap between interior and exterior spaces — patterns that reference the garden, the landscape, or the natural world — are particularly well-suited to this lifestyle. In spaces that open directly to outdoor areas, consider wallcoverings with moisture-resistant properties that can handle the humidity fluctuations that come with open doors and windows.

What's Trending Locally

In San Diego showrooms and design studios, we're seeing strong demand for warm neutrals with subtle texture — products that add depth and interest to a wall without competing with the natural light and views that are such a defining feature of local homes. Grasscloth and natural fiber wallcoverings remain perennially popular, as do soft botanical prints and tone-on-tone textured patterns. In commercial spaces, particularly in the hospitality sector, there's growing interest in custom murals that reference local history, culture, and landscape — a way of creating a sense of place that resonates with both locals and visitors.

The relationship between wallpaper and lighting is one of the most important — and most frequently overlooked — aspects of a successful wallcovering installation. A wallpaper that looks stunning in the showroom can look completely different in your home, and the primary reason is almost always lighting.

Natural Light and Color Temperature

Natural light varies dramatically depending on the orientation of the room. North-facing rooms receive cool, indirect light that can make warm-toned wallpapers look muddy and cool-toned wallpapers look crisp and clear. South-facing rooms receive warm, direct light that enriches warm tones and can wash out cool ones. East-facing rooms have bright morning light that shifts to shadow in the afternoon, while west-facing rooms are dim in the morning and bathed in warm golden light in the evening. Always view wallpaper samples in the actual room at different times of day before making a final decision.

Artificial Lighting and Wallpaper

The color temperature of your artificial lighting has a profound effect on how wallpaper colors appear. Warm white bulbs (2700–3000K) enrich warm tones — reds, oranges, yellows, and warm neutrals — and can make cool tones appear slightly greenish or grey. Cool white bulbs (4000K and above) render colors more accurately but can make warm-toned wallpapers feel cold and flat. For most residential applications, warm white lighting is the more flattering choice, particularly for wallpapers in the warm neutral, botanical, and earth-tone families that are so popular in San Diego interiors.

Texture and Directional Light

Textured wallcoverings are particularly sensitive to the direction of light. Raking light — light that strikes the wall at a low angle — dramatically emphasizes texture by casting shadows in the recesses of the surface. This can be a beautiful effect with grasscloth or a dimensional raised-pattern wallcovering, but it can also reveal imperfections in the wall surface that would be invisible under more diffuse lighting. Conversely, diffuse overhead lighting minimizes texture and can make a deeply textured wallcovering look flatter than it actually is. Consider the placement of your light fixtures relative to your wallcovering when planning your installation.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important consideration in interior design, and the wallcovering industry has responded with a growing range of products that prioritize environmental responsibility without compromising on beauty or performance. But navigating the claims and certifications can be confusing — here's what to look for.

Natural and Renewable Materials

The most straightforwardly sustainable wallcoverings are those made from natural, renewable materials: grasscloth, jute, sisal, seagrass, cork, and other plant-based fibers. These materials are harvested from rapidly renewable sources, require minimal processing, and are biodegradable at the end of their useful life. They also tend to be free from the synthetic chemicals and plasticizers associated with vinyl products. The trade-off is that natural fiber wallcoverings are generally less durable and less cleanable than their synthetic counterparts, making them better suited to low-traffic residential applications.

Certifications to Look For

Several third-party certification programs help consumers identify wallcoverings that meet meaningful environmental standards. GREENGUARD Gold certification indicates that a product has been tested for chemical emissions and meets strict standards for indoor air quality — particularly important for products used in schools, healthcare facilities, and children's spaces. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification on paper-based products indicates that the wood pulp was sourced from responsibly managed forests. Cradle to Cradle certification evaluates products across multiple sustainability dimensions including material health, recyclability, and manufacturing practices.

PVC-Free and Low-VOC Options

Traditional vinyl wallcoverings contain PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a plastic that raises environmental concerns at both the manufacturing and disposal stages. Many manufacturers now offer PVC-free alternatives that provide similar performance characteristics using more environmentally benign materials. Look for products described as PVC-free, phthalate-free, or made with water-based inks and adhesives. Low-VOC (volatile organic compound) products off-gas fewer harmful chemicals during and after installation, contributing to better indoor air quality. When in doubt, ask your wallcovering specialist about the environmental credentials of any product you're considering.

The bedroom is the most personal room in the house — the one space that is entirely yours, designed for rest, renewal, and retreat. Wallpaper in the bedroom has the power to transform an ordinary room into a sanctuary, creating an atmosphere that supports sleep, relaxation, and a sense of personal identity.

Color and Mood in the Bedroom

Color psychology plays a particularly important role in the bedroom, where the goal is typically to create a calm, restful atmosphere. Cool blues, soft greens, warm taupes, and muted neutrals are consistently the most popular choices for bedroom wallcoverings — these tones have been shown to lower heart rate and reduce cortisol levels, supporting the transition into sleep. Deep, saturated colors — navy, forest green, charcoal — can also work beautifully in bedrooms, creating a cocooning effect that feels intimate and enveloping. Avoid highly stimulating colors like bright red, orange, or yellow in spaces where you want to promote rest.

Pattern Choices for the Bedroom

The bedroom is one of the best rooms in the house for a full-room wallpaper installation — the immersive quality of being surrounded by a beautiful pattern enhances the sense of retreat. Soft botanical prints, delicate geometric patterns, and tone-on-tone textures all work beautifully in bedroom applications. The headboard wall is the natural focal point of most bedrooms and is an excellent candidate for a bolder pattern or a mural, while the remaining walls can be kept in a complementary solid or subtle texture.

Practical Considerations

Bedrooms are generally lower-traffic than other rooms in the house, which means you have more freedom to choose delicate materials like grasscloth, silk, or fine paper wallpapers that might not be practical in a hallway or kitchen. However, consider the wall behind the headboard carefully — this area is subject to contact from pillows and headboards and may benefit from a more durable product. Ensure adequate ventilation in the bedroom to prevent moisture buildup, particularly in coastal climates where humidity can be a factor. Choose low-VOC products and water-based adhesives to maintain the best possible indoor air quality in the room where you spend the most time.

Wallpaper has a history that spans more than five centuries, evolving from hand-painted luxury panels reserved for royalty to mass-produced products available to virtually everyone, and back again to artisanal, limited-edition designs that command premium prices. Understanding that history gives a deeper appreciation for the craft and artistry that goes into the best wallcoverings available today.

Origins: China and Europe

The earliest wallcoverings were not paper at all but painted silk and fabric panels used in Chinese imperial interiors as early as the 2nd century BCE. Paper wallcoverings first appeared in China following the invention of paper, and by the 16th century, hand-painted Chinese wallpapers depicting landscapes, birds, and flowers were being imported to Europe, where they were prized as luxury goods. European craftsmen began producing their own wallpapers in imitation of the Chinese imports, initially as small sheets that were pasted together to form larger panels.

The Industrial Revolution and Mass Production

The invention of the continuous paper roll in the early 19th century and the development of mechanical printing presses transformed wallpaper from a luxury product into an affordable commodity. By the mid-19th century, wallpaper was being produced in enormous quantities and was available to middle-class households throughout Europe and America. The Arts and Crafts movement, led by designers like William Morris, pushed back against the aesthetic decline that accompanied mass production, creating hand-printed wallpapers of exceptional quality and artistic merit that remain influential to this day.

The Modern Era

The 20th century saw wallpaper fall in and out of fashion multiple times, reaching a low point in the 1990s when minimalism and painted walls dominated interior design. The 21st century has brought a remarkable renaissance — driven by digital printing technology that allows virtually any image to be reproduced at any scale, a renewed appreciation for craft and pattern, and a design culture that celebrates individuality and self-expression. Today's wallcovering market encompasses everything from mass-market peel-and-stick products to hand-screened artisanal designs that take weeks to produce — a range that reflects the full spectrum of human desire for beauty on our walls.

The entryway and hallway are the first spaces your guests experience when they enter your home — and the last they see when they leave. These transitional spaces set the tone for everything that follows, and wallpaper is one of the most powerful tools available for making that first impression truly memorable.

Why Entryways Are Perfect for Bold Wallpaper

Entryways and hallways share a characteristic that makes them ideal candidates for bold wallpaper choices: people pass through them rather than spending extended time in them. This means you can use patterns and colors that might feel overwhelming in a living room or bedroom without any concern about visual fatigue. A dramatic chinoiserie, a rich jewel-toned geometric, or a floor-to-ceiling mural that would be too intense for a room you spend hours in every day can be absolutely perfect in a space that's experienced in passing.

Practical Challenges of Hallway Wallpaper

Hallways present some practical challenges for wallpaper installation. They tend to be narrow, which means the wallpaper will be viewed at close range — any imperfections in the installation, particularly at seams, will be immediately visible. Choose a professional installer with experience in tight spaces, and select a product with a forgiving seam — non-woven wallpapers with a butt seam are generally the most invisible. Hallways also tend to receive more physical contact than other spaces, as people brush against the walls while passing through, so choose a product with a durable, cleanable surface.

Design Strategies for Long Hallways

Long, narrow hallways can feel tunnel-like and oppressive if not handled thoughtfully. Wallpaper can help address this in several ways. Horizontal patterns — stripes, wide bands, or patterns with a strong horizontal emphasis — can make a narrow hallway feel wider. Patterns with depth and perspective, such as trompe l'oeil designs or scenic murals, can create the illusion of space beyond the wall. Light-colored wallpapers with reflective or metallic elements can brighten a dark hallway and make it feel more open. Conversely, if you want to embrace the intimacy of a narrow hallway rather than fight it, a rich, dark, enveloping pattern can transform it into a dramatic passage that feels intentional and luxurious.

Combining wallpaper and paint in the same room is one of the most effective and versatile design strategies available. Done well, it creates a layered, considered look that feels both intentional and dynamic. Done poorly, it can feel disjointed and unresolved. The key is understanding the principles that make the combination work.

The Classic Approach: Accent Wall

The most straightforward way to combine wallpaper and paint is to wallpaper a single accent wall and paint the remaining walls in a color drawn from the wallpaper's palette. This approach creates a clear focal point while maintaining visual cohesion — the painted walls echo the wallpaper without competing with it. When selecting the paint color, choose one of the secondary or background colors from the wallpaper rather than the dominant color, which can create a jarring effect when used on adjacent walls.

Above and Below: Chair Rails and Wainscoting

Another classic approach is to divide the wall horizontally, using wallpaper above a chair rail and paint below, or vice versa. Wallpaper above and paint below is the more traditional arrangement — it keeps the more decorative element at eye level while the painted lower portion provides a durable, easily touched-up surface. Paint above and wallpaper below (as a wainscoting treatment) is a more contemporary approach that grounds the room with pattern and texture at a lower level. In both cases, the chair rail or transition point should be at a height that feels proportionally balanced — typically between 32 and 36 inches from the floor.

Color Coordination Principles

The most important principle when combining wallpaper and paint is color coordination. The paint color should feel like it belongs in the same family as the wallpaper — not necessarily matching, but clearly related. Pull a color from the wallpaper and use it as the basis for your paint selection, then adjust the value (lightness or darkness) to create the relationship you want. A paint that is slightly lighter than the wallpaper's background color creates a soft, harmonious effect. A paint that is significantly darker creates a more dramatic contrast. Avoid paint colors that are not represented anywhere in the wallpaper — they will feel disconnected and arbitrary.

The home office has become one of the most important rooms in the house over the past several years, as remote and hybrid work arrangements have made the quality of the home working environment a genuine priority. Wallpaper is one of the most effective tools for transforming a spare bedroom or corner of a room into a space that feels professional, inspiring, and distinctly yours.

The Psychology of the Work Environment

Research in environmental psychology consistently shows that the quality of the physical work environment has a significant impact on productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction. A thoughtfully designed home office — one that feels intentional rather than improvised — signals to your brain that this is a space for focused work. Wallpaper plays a powerful role in establishing that sense of intentionality: a beautifully wallpapered office feels like a real workspace rather than a temporary arrangement.

Choosing the Right Pattern for Productivity

The pattern you choose for a home office should support the kind of work you do there. For creative work — writing, design, art — a more stimulating pattern can be energizing and inspiring. Bold geometrics, rich botanicals, and graphic prints can fuel creative thinking. For analytical or focused work — accounting, coding, detailed reading — a more subdued pattern is generally more supportive. Subtle textures, tone-on-tone designs, and small-scale patterns provide visual interest without distraction. Consider also the background of video calls: a wallpapered wall behind your desk creates a professional and visually interesting backdrop.

Practical Considerations

Home offices tend to have more wall-mounted elements than other rooms — shelves, monitors, whiteboards, and artwork — which means more holes and potential wall damage over time. Choose a wallpaper that can be repaired relatively easily, or consider limiting the wallpaper to a single accent wall behind the desk where it will be most visible and least likely to be disturbed. Ensure the room has adequate lighting — both natural and artificial — to support focused work without eye strain. The right combination of wallpaper, lighting, and furniture can transform even the smallest home office into a space that genuinely supports your best work.

The powder room — that small, often windowless half-bath near the main living areas — is arguably the most wallpaper-friendly room in the entire house. Its small size makes a full-room installation affordable even with premium materials, its limited use means durability is less of a concern than in other rooms, and its role as a guest bathroom makes it the perfect canvas for a bold, memorable design statement.

Why Powder Rooms Are Perfect for Wallpaper

Powder rooms are used briefly and infrequently, which means you can use materials and patterns that would be impractical in higher-traffic spaces. A hand-printed grasscloth, a delicate silk-effect wallpaper, or a dramatic scenic mural that would be overwhelming in a living room can be absolutely perfect in a powder room. The small scale of the space also means that even the most expensive wallpapers are affordable — a powder room typically requires only two to four single rolls of material, making it the ideal room to splurge on a truly exceptional product.

Moisture Considerations

Even though powder rooms don't have showers, they do experience humidity from hand washing and the occasional splash. Choose a product with at least some moisture resistance — a vinyl-coated or non-woven wallpaper is a safer choice than a pure paper product. Ensure the room has adequate ventilation, and consider running the exhaust fan for a few minutes after use to remove excess humidity. Avoid installing wallpaper directly adjacent to the sink where it might be regularly splashed with water.

Design Ideas for Small Spaces

The powder room is the perfect place to experiment with designs you might not be ready to commit to in a larger space. A floor-to-ceiling mural creates a dramatic, immersive effect that transforms the room into an experience. A bold geometric in a jewel tone — emerald, sapphire, or deep burgundy — creates a sense of luxury and sophistication. A whimsical or unexpected pattern — vintage botanical illustrations, a trompe l'oeil bookshelf, an abstract expressionist print — can become a conversation piece that guests remember long after they've left. In the powder room, the only rule is that there are no rules.

Natural materials have always had a place in the wallcovering world, but the current moment feels different — more urgent, more considered, and more deeply integrated into the broader design conversation. The appeal of grasscloth, cork, jute, seagrass, and wood veneer wallcoverings goes beyond aesthetics: it reflects a genuine shift in values toward sustainability, authenticity, and a desire to bring the natural world into our built environments.

Grasscloth and Natural Fibers

Grasscloth remains the most popular natural fiber wallcovering, and its appeal shows no signs of diminishing. The combination of organic texture, warm color, and the subtle variations that come from natural materials creates a wall surface that is both visually interesting and deeply calming. Grasscloth is available in an enormous range of colors — from the natural undyed tones of raw jute and sisal to richly dyed versions in virtually any color of the spectrum. Each roll is slightly different from the next, which means a grasscloth installation has a handcrafted quality that no synthetic product can replicate.

Cork and Wood Veneer

Cork wallcoverings offer a unique combination of natural texture, acoustic performance, and sustainability — cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming the tree, making it one of the most renewable materials available. Cork wallcoverings range from fine-grained products that read almost as a texture to chunky, dimensional products that create a dramatic tactile surface. Wood veneer wallcoverings — thin slices of real wood mounted on a flexible backing — bring the warmth and grain of natural wood to wall surfaces in a way that painted or printed imitations simply cannot match.

Care and Limitations

Natural material wallcoverings require more care than their synthetic counterparts. Most cannot be washed and are sensitive to moisture, making them unsuitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and other high-humidity spaces. They are also more susceptible to fading from direct sunlight and may show wear in high-traffic areas. These limitations are the trade-off for the unmatched beauty and authenticity of natural materials — and for most residential applications in appropriate rooms, they are well worth accepting. Consult with your wallcovering specialist about the specific care requirements of any natural material product you're considering.

One of the most common misconceptions about wallpaper is that it's only for homeowners. The rise of peel-and-stick and removable wallpaper technologies has fundamentally changed what's possible for renters — and even for homeowners who want the flexibility to change their walls without the commitment of traditional installation.

Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

Peel-and-stick wallpaper uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive that bonds to the wall surface without the need for paste or water. When properly applied to a clean, smooth, painted surface, it can be removed without damaging the wall — making it ideal for rental properties. The quality of peel-and-stick products has improved dramatically in recent years, and many now offer designs and textures that are virtually indistinguishable from traditional wallpaper at normal viewing distances. The trade-off is that peel-and-stick products are generally less durable than paste-hung wallpapers and may not adhere as reliably to textured or imperfect wall surfaces.

Traditional Wallpaper in Rentals

Traditional paste-hung wallpaper is not necessarily off-limits in rental properties — but it requires a conversation with your landlord before installation. Many landlords will permit wallpaper installation if you agree to remove it and repair the walls before moving out. Non-woven wallpapers are the best choice for rental installations because they remove cleanly and dry without damaging the wall surface. Always prime the wall before installation and use a removable wallpaper paste rather than a permanent adhesive to make future removal as clean as possible.

Temporary Alternatives

For renters who want the look of wallpaper without any risk to their security deposit, there are several temporary alternatives worth considering. Fabric wall hangings and tapestries can cover large wall areas without any adhesive. Large-format art prints and gallery walls can create a similar sense of pattern and visual interest. Removable wall decals offer a middle ground between full wallpaper and bare walls. And for those who want the real thing, focusing on a single small area — the inside of a closet, a bookshelf back panel, or a small bathroom — minimizes both cost and risk while still allowing you to experience the transformative effect of wallpaper.

Custom wall murals have emerged as one of the most powerful tools in commercial interior design, transforming ordinary business spaces into immersive brand environments that leave lasting impressions on clients, customers, and employees alike. From boutique hotels and restaurants to corporate headquarters and retail flagships, custom murals are redefining what it means to create a branded interior.

The Power of Place-Making

In an era when consumers have more choices than ever, the physical experience of a business space has become a critical differentiator. A custom mural that tells a brand's story, celebrates its heritage, or expresses its values creates an emotional connection with visitors that no digital marketing can replicate. The best commercial murals are not merely decorative — they are narrative, communicating something meaningful about who the business is and what it stands for. This storytelling quality is what transforms a mural from a design element into a genuine brand asset.

Types of Commercial Murals

Commercial murals fall into several broad categories. Brand heritage murals celebrate a company's history through archival imagery, timelines, and historical references. Landscape and environmental murals bring the natural world into interior spaces, creating a sense of place and connection to the local environment. Abstract and artistic murals commission original artwork that expresses the brand's aesthetic values without literal representation. Typographic murals use words, quotes, and brand messaging as the primary visual element. Each approach has its strengths, and the right choice depends on the brand's identity, the space's function, and the audience it serves.

The Process of Creating a Custom Mural

Creating a custom commercial mural typically begins with a creative brief that defines the brand's objectives, the space's dimensions and conditions, and the desired aesthetic outcome. A designer or artist then develops concept options for client review, refining the chosen direction through an iterative approval process. Once the design is finalized, it is prepared for production — either printed on a wallcovering substrate for installation by a professional wallpaper installer, or painted directly on the wall by a muralist. The production and installation timeline for a custom mural project typically ranges from four to twelve weeks depending on the complexity of the design and the scale of the installation.

The living room is the heart of the home — the space where family gathers, guests are entertained, and daily life unfolds. It's also one of the most challenging rooms to wallpaper successfully, because it needs to be both beautiful and livable, both visually interesting and comfortable to spend extended time in.

Balancing Impact and Livability

The key challenge in wallpapering a living room is finding the balance between visual impact and livability. A pattern that is too bold or too busy can feel exhausting to live with over time — the living room is a space where you spend hours every day, and the walls are always in your peripheral vision. Patterns that work beautifully in a dining room or powder room, where they're experienced briefly, can feel overwhelming in a living room. Aim for patterns that are interesting without being demanding — designs that reward closer inspection but don't insist on attention from across the room.

Working with Furniture and Architecture

Living rooms typically have more furniture, architectural features, and competing visual elements than other rooms — sofas, coffee tables, bookshelves, fireplaces, artwork, and windows all compete for attention. Choose a wallpaper that complements rather than competes with these elements. A textured or tone-on-tone wallpaper provides a rich backdrop that enhances the furniture and architecture without fighting them. If you have a strong architectural feature — a fireplace, a built-in bookcase, a bay window — consider using wallpaper to highlight it rather than covering all four walls uniformly.

Durability in High-Traffic Spaces

Living rooms are high-traffic spaces that see significant wear — children, pets, furniture movement, and daily activity all take a toll on wall surfaces. Choose a wallpaper with a durable, cleanable surface — a vinyl-coated or non-woven product is generally more practical than a delicate natural fiber in a family living room. Consider the areas most vulnerable to damage: the wall behind the sofa, the area around light switches, and any wall that furniture is pushed against. A chair rail or wainscoting treatment can protect the lower portion of the wall while allowing you to use a more decorative product above.

Staircases and landings are among the most dramatic wallpaper opportunities in the home. The tall, continuous wall surfaces, the changing perspective as you ascend or descend, and the fact that people move through the space slowly and at close range all make staircases ideal candidates for bold, immersive wallpaper installations.

The Drama of Height

Staircase walls are often the tallest uninterrupted wall surfaces in a home, sometimes spanning two or even three stories. This height creates an opportunity for wallpaper designs that simply aren't possible in rooms with standard eight-foot ceilings. A large-scale botanical or scenic mural that would be truncated in a normal room can unfold in its full glory on a staircase wall, creating a sense of ascent and discovery as you move through the space. Vertical stripe patterns emphasize the height of the staircase wall, making the space feel even more dramatic and grand.

Installation Challenges

Staircase wallpaper installation is one of the most technically demanding applications in the trade. The angled ceiling line, the varying wall heights at different points on the staircase, and the difficulty of accessing high sections of the wall all require experience and specialized equipment. Professional installation is strongly recommended for staircase applications — attempting a DIY installation on a tall staircase wall is both physically dangerous and likely to produce a result that doesn't do justice to the wallpaper. Budget for the additional labor cost of a staircase installation, which typically runs higher than a standard room installation.

Design Considerations

When choosing wallpaper for a staircase, consider how the pattern will read at different distances and angles. A pattern that looks beautiful when viewed straight-on may look distorted when viewed from above or below at the angle of the staircase. Bring samples home and view them from the staircase itself before making a final decision. Also consider the relationship between the staircase wallpaper and the rooms it connects — the pattern should feel like a natural transition between the spaces rather than a jarring interruption. A wallpaper that shares colors or design elements with both the upper and lower floors creates a sense of cohesion throughout the home.

Using wallpaper as a kitchen backsplash is a design choice that surprises many people — but done correctly, it can be both beautiful and practical. It's also significantly more affordable than tile, easier to change when you want a new look, and capable of introducing patterns and colors that tile simply cannot replicate.

Is It Really Practical?

The key to a successful wallpaper backsplash is choosing the right product and protecting it properly. A vinyl wallpaper with a smooth, non-porous surface is the most practical choice — it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and resists the grease and moisture that are inevitable in a kitchen environment. Some designers apply a coat of clear polyurethane or a specialized wallpaper sealer over the installed wallpaper to provide additional protection. This approach works best in areas that see light splashing rather than direct water contact — the area above the countertop and below the upper cabinets, away from the sink and cooktop.

Design Possibilities

The design possibilities for a wallpaper backsplash are virtually unlimited. Tile-effect wallpapers — products that convincingly mimic the look of subway tile, Moroccan zellige, or hand-painted Portuguese azulejo — are a popular choice for their ability to create the look of tile at a fraction of the cost. But the real opportunity is to use patterns that tile cannot produce: a botanical print that brings the garden into the kitchen, a geometric pattern in colors that perfectly match your cabinetry, or a custom mural that makes the backsplash the focal point of the entire kitchen.

Installation and Maintenance

Kitchen backsplash wallpaper installation requires careful surface preparation — the wall must be perfectly smooth, clean, and primed before installation. Use a high-quality, moisture-resistant adhesive and ensure all seams are sealed. After installation, apply a protective sealer if desired and allow it to cure fully before exposing the surface to moisture or grease. Clean the backsplash regularly with a soft, damp cloth and a mild detergent — avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads that could damage the surface. With proper installation and care, a wallpaper backsplash can last for many years and be changed relatively easily when you're ready for a new look.

Color trends in wallcoverings don't emerge in isolation — they reflect broader shifts in culture, lifestyle, and our collective relationship with the natural and built environment. Understanding the forces driving current color trends helps you make choices that feel both current and personally meaningful.

Warm Neutrals and Earth Tones

The cool, grey-dominated neutrals that defined interior design for much of the 2010s have given way to a warmer palette rooted in earth and nature. Warm whites, creamy off-whites, sandy taupes, terracotta, and warm ochre are consistently among the most popular wallcovering colors — they create spaces that feel grounded, comfortable, and connected to the natural world. These tones work beautifully with the natural material wallcoverings — grasscloth, cork, linen — that are simultaneously trending, creating a cohesive aesthetic that feels both current and timeless.

Deep, Saturated Colors

At the other end of the spectrum, deep and saturated colors are enjoying a significant moment. Forest green, navy blue, deep burgundy, and rich plum are all appearing frequently in high-end residential and hospitality interiors. These colors create a sense of drama, intimacy, and luxury that lighter tones cannot achieve. They work particularly well in dining rooms, bedrooms, and other spaces where a cocooning, enveloping atmosphere is desirable. The key to using deep colors successfully is to commit fully — a half-hearted deep color looks muddy and indecisive, while a fully saturated, well-chosen deep tone looks intentional and sophisticated.

Sage Green and Dusty Blues

Two colors deserve special mention for their sustained popularity across multiple design seasons: sage green and dusty blue. Sage green — a muted, grey-green that references the color of dried herbs and coastal scrub — has become one of the defining colors of contemporary residential design. It works in virtually every room, pairs beautifully with natural materials and warm wood tones, and has a calming quality that makes it particularly well-suited to bedrooms and living rooms. Dusty blue — a soft, slightly greyed blue that references the color of faded denim or a hazy sky — has a similar versatility and a timeless quality that transcends seasonal trends. Both colors are available across a wide range of wallcovering styles, from grasscloth to geometric to botanical.

One of the most common questions we hear from clients is whether they should install their wallpaper themselves or hire a professional. The honest answer is that it depends — on the product, the room, the complexity of the installation, and your own skill level and patience.

When DIY Makes Sense

DIY installation is a reasonable choice for simple rooms with few obstacles — a small bedroom with minimal doors and windows, a powder room, or a single accent wall. Non-woven wallpapers with a paste-the-wall installation method are the most forgiving for DIY installers — they don't expand when wet, they're easy to reposition before the adhesive sets, and they remove cleanly if you need to start over. Peel-and-stick wallpapers are even more forgiving and are an excellent choice for first-time installers. If you're patient, detail-oriented, and willing to take your time, a simple DIY installation can produce excellent results.

When to Hire a Professional

Professional installation is strongly recommended for complex rooms with many obstacles — rooms with multiple doors, windows, built-ins, or architectural features that require precise cutting and fitting. It's also the right choice for expensive or delicate materials — natural fiber wallcoverings, hand-printed papers, and premium commercial products represent a significant investment that deserves professional handling. Rooms with imperfect walls — uneven surfaces, previous wallpaper residue, or significant texture — require surface preparation skills that most DIY installers don't have. And any installation that requires working at height — staircases, rooms with tall ceilings — should always be handled by a professional with the proper equipment.

The True Cost of DIY

When evaluating the cost of DIY versus professional installation, factor in not just the labor cost but the cost of potential mistakes. A professional installer who makes an error will typically correct it at their own expense — a DIY installer who makes an error may need to purchase additional material to fix it. The cost of extra material, plus the time spent on a failed installation, can easily exceed the cost of professional installation from the start. For expensive wallpapers in particular, the peace of mind that comes with professional installation is well worth the additional cost. At Gael's, we can recommend experienced local installers who work with the products we carry.

The hospitality industry has long been at the forefront of wallcovering innovation. Hotels, restaurants, spas, and entertainment venues are among the most demanding environments for wallcoverings — they must withstand heavy use, frequent cleaning, and the scrutiny of guests who notice every detail. The solutions developed for hospitality applications have consistently pushed the boundaries of what wallcoverings can do, and many of the most exciting products in the market today were originally developed for hospitality use.

Creating Atmosphere and Brand Identity

In hospitality design, wallcoverings do far more than cover walls — they create atmosphere, communicate brand identity, and shape the guest experience. A boutique hotel that uses hand-printed grasscloth in its guest rooms is making a statement about its values: craftsmanship, authenticity, and attention to detail. A restaurant that commissions a custom mural for its dining room is investing in a visual experience that guests will remember and share. The best hospitality wallcovering installations are those where the design feels so integral to the space that guests can't imagine the room without it.

Performance Requirements

Hospitality wallcoverings must meet performance standards that go well beyond residential requirements. Fire ratings, cleanability, abrasion resistance, and antimicrobial properties are all critical considerations. Type II and Type III commercial vinyl wallcoverings are the workhorses of the hospitality industry — they can withstand the rigorous cleaning protocols required in hotel corridors, guest bathrooms, and food service areas while maintaining their appearance over years of heavy use. For public areas where aesthetics are paramount, luxury natural fiber products and custom murals are increasingly being specified alongside high-performance commercial products.

Lessons for Residential Design

The hospitality industry's approach to wallcoverings offers valuable lessons for residential design. The emphasis on creating a complete, immersive environment — where the wallcovering is part of a cohesive design vision rather than an afterthought — is something that translates directly to the home. The willingness to invest in quality materials and professional installation, understanding that the long-term value of a beautiful, durable installation far exceeds the short-term savings of a cheaper approach, is equally applicable. And the focus on creating spaces that tell a story and create an emotional response — spaces that guests remember and want to return to — is perhaps the most important lesson of all.

One of the most common concerns people have about wallpaper is whether they'll be able to hang artwork on the walls. The answer is yes — art and wallpaper can coexist beautifully, and in many cases the combination is more interesting and layered than either element alone. The key is understanding how to hang artwork without damaging the wallpaper and how to create a visual relationship between the art and the pattern behind it.

Hanging Methods That Protect Wallpaper

The safest way to hang artwork on wallpapered walls is to use picture hooks with fine nails that create minimal holes. Adhesive picture-hanging strips are an excellent option for lighter pieces — they hold securely and remove cleanly without damaging the wallpaper surface. For heavier pieces, locate wall studs and use appropriate anchors, accepting that the small nail holes will be visible but can be touched up if needed. Avoid adhesive putty directly on wallpaper — it can pull the surface coating off when removed. Command strips designed for smooth surfaces work well on vinyl-coated wallpapers but may not adhere reliably to textured natural fiber products.

Creating Visual Harmony

The relationship between artwork and wallpaper requires careful thought. A busy, patterned wallpaper can overwhelm delicate or detailed artwork — the pattern competes with the image rather than supporting it. In general, the more complex the wallpaper pattern, the simpler and bolder the artwork should be. A single large-scale abstract painting or a bold graphic print reads clearly against a patterned background, while a collection of small, detailed works may get lost. Conversely, a subtle textured or tone-on-tone wallpaper provides a beautiful backdrop for virtually any type of artwork.

Gallery Walls on Wallpaper

Gallery walls — collections of multiple artworks arranged together — can work beautifully on wallpapered surfaces, but they require more planning than on a plain painted wall. The wallpaper pattern becomes part of the composition, so consider how the frames and images will interact with the pattern behind them. Frames with a strong, simple profile — thin metal frames, wide white mats — tend to read clearly against most wallpaper patterns. Frameless prints or canvases can feel like they're floating on the pattern in an interesting way. Plan your gallery wall layout on paper before making any holes, and consider the overall visual weight of the arrangement relative to the pattern of the wallpaper.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper has been one of the most significant developments in the wallcovering industry in recent years, opening up the world of wallpaper to renters and anyone who wants the flexibility to change their walls without the commitment of traditional installation. But getting a great result with peel-and-stick requires understanding its specific characteristics and limitations.

Surface Preparation is Everything

The most important factor in a successful peel-and-stick installation is surface preparation. The adhesive on peel-and-stick wallpaper is pressure-sensitive, which means it bonds to whatever it touches — including dust, grease, and texture. Clean the wall thoroughly with a mild detergent solution and allow it to dry completely before installation. Peel-and-stick wallpaper adheres best to smooth, flat surfaces — it will not bond reliably to heavily textured walls, and the texture will show through the wallpaper. If your walls have a significant texture, consider applying a skim coat of joint compound to smooth them before installation.

Installation Tips

Start at a plumb vertical line — use a level to mark a straight line on the wall before you begin, as walls are rarely perfectly plumb and starting against a corner will result in a crooked installation. Peel back only a few inches of the backing at a time as you work down the wall — peeling the entire backing off at once makes the strip difficult to handle and increases the risk of wrinkles and bubbles. Use a squeegee or credit card to smooth the wallpaper as you go, working from the center outward to push out any air bubbles. Overlap strips slightly at the seams and then use a sharp blade to cut through both layers simultaneously for a perfect butt seam.

Removal and Reuse

When it's time to remove peel-and-stick wallpaper, work slowly and carefully. Peel at a low angle — almost parallel to the wall surface — rather than pulling straight out, which reduces the risk of damaging the paint beneath. If the wallpaper has been in place for a long time or in a warm environment, the adhesive may have become more aggressive and removal may require more care. Some peel-and-stick wallpapers can be repositioned and reused if removed carefully — roll them up with the adhesive side in and store them flat. Check the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance on removal and reuse for the product you've chosen.

Wallpaper and architecture have a long and productive relationship. From the paneled rooms of 18th-century European palaces, where wallpaper was designed to complement elaborate plasterwork and carved moldings, to today's contemporary interiors where wallpaper is used to create the illusion of architectural features that don't physically exist, wallpaper has always been one of the most powerful tools for shaping the architectural character of a space.

Emphasizing Existing Architecture

In rooms with beautiful existing architectural features — coffered ceilings, deep crown moldings, paneled walls, bay windows — wallpaper can be used to emphasize and celebrate those features. Applying wallpaper within the panels of a paneled wall, for example, creates a layered effect that makes the architectural detail more prominent. Using a different wallpaper in a ceiling cove or above a picture rail draws the eye upward and emphasizes the height of the room. A wallpaper that references the architectural style of the building — a Georgian-inspired damask in a period house, a clean geometric in a mid-century modern home — creates a sense of coherence between the architecture and the interior.

Creating Architectural Character

In rooms that lack architectural character — the plain, boxy rooms that are common in modern construction — wallpaper can be used to create the illusion of architectural features. A trompe l'oeil wallpaper that mimics paneling, wainscoting, or stone blocks can give a featureless room a sense of history and craftsmanship. Vertical stripe wallpapers can create the visual effect of pilasters or columns. A wallpaper with a strong horizontal emphasis can suggest a picture rail or dado rail even where none exists. These illusionistic effects are most convincing when the wallpaper is of high quality and the installation is precise.

Defining Zones Within Open Plans

In open-plan spaces where different functional areas flow into one another without physical walls to separate them, wallpaper can be used to define zones and create a sense of spatial organization. Applying wallpaper to the wall behind a dining area, for example, creates a visual boundary that separates the dining zone from the adjacent living area without the need for a physical partition. This technique is particularly effective in loft-style spaces and open-plan kitchen-dining-living areas, where the challenge is to create a sense of distinct spaces within a single continuous volume.

Choosing wallpaper is one of the most enjoyable parts of an interior design project — but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. The sheer number of options available, the difficulty of visualizing how a sample will look at full scale in your specific room, and the significant investment involved all make professional guidance genuinely valuable. Working with an interior designer or wallcovering specialist can save time, money, and frustration, and often leads to a result that exceeds what you could have achieved on your own.

What a Specialist Brings to the Process

A wallcovering specialist brings several things to the selection process that are difficult to replicate on your own. First, they have access to a much wider range of products than what's available in retail stores or online — including trade-only lines from premium manufacturers that aren't available to the general public. Second, they have the experience to anticipate how a product will look in your specific room, accounting for your lighting conditions, existing furniture and finishes, and the scale of the space. Third, they can identify potential installation challenges before they become expensive problems.

Preparing for Your Consultation

To get the most out of a consultation with a wallcovering specialist, come prepared with as much information as possible about your space and your vision. Bring photographs of the room from multiple angles, including close-ups of any existing finishes, furniture, and architectural features. Bring fabric swatches or paint chips from any elements you want to coordinate with. Have your room dimensions ready, including ceiling height and the dimensions of any doors, windows, and other openings. And bring images of wallpapers or interiors that inspire you — even if they're not exactly what you want, they communicate your aesthetic direction more effectively than words alone.

The Value of Sampling

No matter how confident you feel about a wallpaper choice, always order a sample before committing to a full installation. A sample allows you to see the actual color, texture, and scale of the pattern in your specific room under your specific lighting conditions — and the difference between a sample in the showroom and the same product on your walls can be significant. Most wallcovering specialists can provide large samples or even hang a test strip in your room before you place your order. This small investment of time and money can prevent the much larger expense of an installation you're not happy with. At Gael's, we encourage every client to live with a sample for at least a few days before making a final decision.

As outdoor living spaces have become increasingly sophisticated — with covered patios, pergolas, and outdoor rooms that function as true extensions of the interior — the question of how to finish the walls of these spaces has become more relevant. The right wallcovering can transform a covered outdoor space from a functional shelter into a genuinely beautiful room.

The Challenges of Outdoor Applications

Outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces present wallcovering challenges that don't exist indoors. Even in covered spaces, walls are exposed to higher humidity levels, greater temperature fluctuations, and occasional wind-driven moisture than interior walls. UV exposure from indirect sunlight can cause colors to fade more rapidly than in interior applications. And the presence of insects, mold, and mildew is a greater concern outdoors than in climate-controlled interiors. Any wallcovering used in an outdoor or semi-outdoor application must be specifically designed or rated for that environment.

Suitable Products for Outdoor Use

The most suitable wallcovering products for covered outdoor spaces are those with the highest moisture resistance and UV stability. Heavy-duty commercial vinyl wallcoverings — particularly Type II and Type III products — are the most practical choice for outdoor applications. Some manufacturers produce products specifically designed for outdoor use, with UV-stabilized inks, mold-resistant substrates, and adhesives formulated for high-humidity environments. Tile and stone-effect wallcoverings in these materials can create a beautiful, durable surface that complements the outdoor setting.

Design Considerations

When designing a covered outdoor space, consider how the wallcovering will relate to the natural environment beyond the space. Patterns that reference the garden, the landscape, or the natural world — botanicals, stone effects, wood effects — tend to feel more appropriate in outdoor settings than purely abstract or geometric designs. Colors that echo the natural palette of the surrounding environment — greens, blues, warm neutrals, terracotta — create a sense of continuity between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The goal is to create a space that feels like a natural extension of the garden rather than an interior room that happens to be outside.

In an era when virtually everything can be purchased online, the wallpaper showroom experience remains genuinely irreplaceable. Wallpaper is a product that must be experienced in person to be truly understood — its color, texture, scale, and quality are all qualities that photographs and digital swatches simply cannot convey accurately. Visiting a showroom is not just a shopping trip; it's an education in what's possible for your walls.

Seeing Scale and Texture in Person

The most important reason to visit a showroom is to experience wallpaper at actual scale. A pattern that looks bold and graphic as a small digital swatch may read as a subtle texture at full scale — or vice versa. The texture of a grasscloth or natural fiber product, which is one of its most important qualities, is completely lost in a photograph. The sheen of a metallic or vinyl-coated product, the depth of a flocked surface, the dimensional quality of a raised-pattern wallcovering — all of these are qualities that can only be appreciated in person. Showrooms display wallpapers at full scale, allowing you to see exactly how a pattern will look on your walls.

Expert Guidance

A good wallpaper showroom is staffed by people who know the products deeply — who can tell you not just what a wallpaper looks like but how it installs, how it wears, how it cleans, and how it will look in your specific room. This expertise is invaluable, particularly for first-time wallpaper buyers who may not know what questions to ask. A knowledgeable showroom consultant can help you navigate the enormous range of options available, identify products that meet your specific requirements, and steer you away from choices that might look beautiful in the showroom but be impractical for your application.
